| Duke keeps peeing We've had Duke for almost a full year and Duke is still peeing on some of his own belongings. He IS housetrained and we let him out in the morning, and before we go to bed. He gets walked everyday for about 30-50minutes. I bought him a dog bed for Christmas from Costco, it's made by Kirkland and at first he didn't like it, he never peed on it though. Then soon he started liking it, and all he ever did was sleep on it. Then one day he decides to pee on it when nobody was there. We were in different rooms and I wasn't home. His bed is in my room. So I guess he snuck in there and pee'd on it. So I washed it not to long ago and no he never touches it, I came home about 8 minutes ago and noticed that he had peed once again on it. He probably did it sometime between last night and the day before that. Is there a problem with him? It isn't like he isn't housetrained. Please Help
Thanks |

| Re: Duke keeps peeing First take him to the vet to eliminate any possible medical conditions that may be contributing to your problem. Then, if he gets a clean bill of health, start all over and give him a house breaking review. This should help you to review.
Housebreaking In A Hurry
The Five Things You Must do to Housebreak Any Dog In A Hurry
Every professional dog trainer knows that there are five keys to succesfully
housebreaking your dog. Ignore any of these five keys and you'll be dooming
yourself to many extra months of housebreaking misery.
1.) Correct the dog any time he has an accident in the house. Keep him confined
to either a crate, or a dog run outside when you can't supervise him.
2.) Praise the dog anytime he eliminates outside.
3.) Establish a specific spot, and a command you repeat (such as "Get busy!")
while you're waiting for him to eliminate outside.
4.) Set up a rigorous feeding and watering schedule, and take him out immediately
after he does both.
5.) Use an odor neutralizer, such as a product called "Nature's Miracle"
(you can buy this at your local pet store, or through a mail order catalog.)
You'll need to make sure that whatever product you're using is an enzymatic
cleaner, meaning that it actually 'breaks down' the urine or fecal mater on
a microscopic level, rather than just masking the scent. |

Duke doesn't really have a bed, he sleeps in our bed during the night. but during the day he'll nap in that up until now |

| Re: Duke keeps peeing I have a suspicion that the bedding material might be triggering the peeing. There is a condition called substrate urination, an aroma or odor that is given off that compels a dog to urinate on that odor to cover it up. While we typically think of a previous urine odor that triggers the compulsion to pee, that is not always the case. Sometimes it's just a particular odor/scent. Little is know about this stimulus or what specific odor(s) can trigger the response. |

Maybe he needs a few more trips outside added to his schedule. Once in the morning, 1 walk and once before bed is only 3 times a day. Could be he needs more. |

What are some other brands to stay away from when buying pet products like beds? Thanks |

Thanks | I certainly didn't mean to imply that there is a problem with Kirkland products...there isn't. I think it's worth trying a different material/bed filler and other brands will likely use different fabrics/fillers (different smell).
If the problem persists with the new bedding then, it's likely not a substrate urination problem. |

| Re: Duke keeps peeing About walks - try adding one more. If the peeing decreases, add even more.
You'll then find out if that's the reason or not. |

| Re: Duke keeps peeing Tooneydogs- I have never heard of substrate urination, I learn something new everyday!
I agree about buying him a new bed. He is connecting his current bed(for whatever reason) with 'going pee', and will only continue on it.
I also agree with taking him out to go potty a few more times during the day. That way he wont have such an urge to relieve himself on his items.
On a side note, I do believe I have the same bed as you. Kirkland from Costco |
