Puppy Pads vs. Litter Training

Hi. I'm new here. My roomie and I got a Yorkie for Christmas. His name is Desi and he will be 11 weeks old this Saturday.

We are training him with puppy pads right now since we live in an apartment complex and are on the 3rd floor. He will pee on the pads, but he won't poop on them! Thank God he's never pooped on the carpet, when he goes its always on the tile. But we don't know how to break him of not going on the floor. We even put out 2 puppy pads side by side, but with a little space in between thinking maybe he wants to pee on one and poop on the other. That still didn't work!

Also, has anyone here ever tried litter training a puppy? We are thinking about starting that next week.

Thanks!
M

Sounds like he doesnt know he is supposed to poop on the pads. Any time you catch him pottying on the tile, say no, pick him up, put him on the pad and praise. A puppy this young should never be out of your sight so catching him in the act should be easy. You may also place his poo on the pad so it smells like the right place to go.

Litter training will be the same as the puppy pads, just cleaner IMO. You will train him the same way. I would decide which method you are going to go with and soon. You dont want to confuse the pup even more

Re: Puppy Pads vs. Litter Training

We are constantly watching him when he's out of his pin. We pick him up when he starts hunching over and place him on his pad and say "go potty", but he'll just walk off and start playing with a toy. Then a few minutes later he'll hunch over again and we do the same thing.

He knows he gets treats and praise. Because if he pees on his pad he comes running and is all excited so we give him 1 treat. But if he poops we give him 2. He's only pooped on his pad once and that's because he was a few inches from it and I scooted the pad under him so it would fall on there instead of the floor. He looked back at it and I made a big deal so he would think he got it and I gave him 2 treats. We make the biggest deal about it when he potty's on his pad and he loves it, but he just doesn't get it sometimes.

We've taught him how to high five, sit and stay, but he doesn't understand to poop on the pad!
