Do you know if the training methods are done with an electric collar. Hopefuly not, they seem like good books.

I do not use an electric collar on my dogs....
I think that most of the training books do address e-collars on some level in that they recognize that people use them.... and they will discuss them but as with anything it is your option to use or not to use them.....

I like these books as it gives me guidance and then I opt to take my own training methods and what works for my dogs and adjust what they suggest to what is good for my dogs.... the Wolters book did not as I recall use an e-collar ...although I believe he addresses the use of them but it is a good basic get started training book... it really stresses starting young and how the dog develops... as a primary training method and I don't believe the marsh and meadow book did either.... but again .... they might discuss them on a rudimentary level.... but you don't have to use them.

WaterDog is the book you want. It was originally published in 1964 and is still recommended by the AKC to train retrievers.

I love the Wolters books- and I don't even have retrievers. Good useful books written in a way that sets everything out step by step.

actually both are excellent...... I don't think he can go wrong with either.... hopefully once he starts training his lab then he will want to read the other anyway and he will be hooked like the rest of us.

gamedog looks at beginning training..... you have to have your dog steady on land before you can move into the water. it also depends on where you are hunting
