Lightbulb the sequence "sit, down, stay"

I was curious if the only way to train a dog and use commands is in that specific order? does anyone have a dog trained to "stay" standing up, or "down" from a stand, or is this just not done?

There is no specific order. My dogs do (should say, did) competitive obedience and all of those commands are learned and done seperately. Teach each one separately and then vary the positions. For example, Sit from a stand, Sit after a down, Sit after a Come. Basically, Sit means Sit no matter where or when.

Except on piping hot asphalt in the middle of the summer. Sometimes we have to let our dogs be smarter than us.

Yes, they can and should be able to do a Sit, Down, or Stay from any position. The easiest way to TEACH Down is from a Sit, because the rear end is already on the floor which is harder to lure lol. Once they know the command you should give it from a standing position at times and from a sitting position at other times, so they learn the action and not the sequence. Also they should learn to sit up from a down position.

The easiest way to TEACH Stay is from a down because it's just a little harder for them to stand up to move; from a sitting position they can either stand up or lie down, which isn't what you really want them to do. But they certainly can Stay from a Sit or even a Stand. i don't really teach the position Stand as a command, but my dogs will stay where they are even if they're just standing around and not lying or sitting. i don't ask for as much time or distance from a stand because miraculously their attention span isn't as long, but i've done 10 minute stand stays compared with 30 minute sit stays and hour long down stays with my dogs before.

Good Heavens! Where did that come from? Have I ever remotely suggested that we force our dogs to do anything that would put them at risk?!

It came from my funny bone.

I recall a doggie event in my town a few months ago, and a lady friend of mine was there with her rot. The sidewalk in this park was paved with asphalt. I saw her across the park and her dog was doing a high step dance. I walked over to her and she couldn't explain why her dog was acting "weird". I took her dog from her and said, have a seat. She sat down on the asphalt, and her dog and I went over to the shade of a tree. About five steps away I could hear her exclaim, "Okay, I get it now."

It was a joke Tooney, I highly respect your advice.

OK. Got it.....Sorry, I was just taken aback that I might have been suggesting that dogs obey, no matter what, even while harming them.
I know what you mean about the hot pavement...I don't do the July 4th parades anymore because of the heat. I always protected their feet and had plenty of water for cooling down but, they seemed uncomfortable for the rest of the day.
