Help grt pry digging

My 8moth old femal great pyrenees has a digging problem she dug some holes, i filled them up and when shes alone in the yard she digs them deeper, i swear i'm going to see china one day. she has plenty of toys outside so i know shes not bored and shes not barking to come in, what ways can i curb this behavior. the vet said to bury chicken wire in the holes but that sounded a little severe if she caught a nail.
thanks

Or you could just drop some rat posion in there. <= Sarcasm BTW. I would say that's a little too severe. I think there are 2 trains of thought. The first being that dogs dig. Try to get them to keep in one location. Whether it's a certain area of the yard, or someone on here suggested buying a baby pool and filling it with sand. Reward them for digging in the designated areas, and if you catch them elsewhere, take them back to the digging hole. The other is that the dogs dig because they have energy to burn or are bored. Toys are great, but no substitution for excercise. How much does your Pyr get? Some people have had solved the problem by burying the dog's poop in the holes. I personally have had no such luck with that, but seems to work for quite a few people.

Re: Help grt pry digging

I have a 3.5 mo old Pyr myself and I am struggling with the digging issue myself! Putting poop in the hole was successful.. but I can only relocate so much poop, you know??

I am really thinking about taking the advice that I received a while back and getting a baby pool and putting sand in it.. I think that will end up being the best option.

Re: Help grt pry digging

we buried plastic mesh under the ground all the way around our yard before we brought our pup home just in case he ever did dig. so far no major digging problems except in one muddy area by the fence that I need to put some mesh in. in the meantime i put a few of his poops in there and it seems to disgust him enough that he found somewhere else to dig... my back garden. but since the garden is full of weeds anyway I don't mind.

we'll have to dig out the back garden and put landscape ties in steps in next spring because it's on a hill so when we do I think i'll make him a designated digging spot with his kiddy pool i got him to cool off in during the summer (which he used maybe 5 times :P ) . that's a really good suggestion. he seems to dig in the same spot anyway.

on the plus side my SO has him trained to keep up the yard work. he "helps" by digging out the edging around the back lawn so no weeds or grass grow into it :P

chicken wire does not work. It gets old and rots and breaks leaving sharp edges sticking out of the ground. And this type of thing is normally used to keep a dog from digging out of the yard.

I have Terrier's so I just take the approach of LET THEM DIG!!! I don't mind though that my yards look like mine fields.

this is the plastic mesh we use. it's got small enough holes they can't chew it and is thick so they can't tear it with teeth or nails. it also won't hurt them if they dig it up.
