New Obedience Class

Last night Zoe and I went to her first class of Beginners Obedience I in Cambridge. It is a very basic class, especially like Puppy Kindergarten again, except that they expect us to actually learn the skills this time, and the dogs are supposed to focus on us and not play the whole time (so it's actually learning rather than socialization). We waited until Zoe was 7 months to start this class because she's still SOOOOOO hyper around other dogs. We use really great treats (semi-moist) for class, and by not feeding her dinner first and just giving her great treats all class, I was surprised at how well she did--paying remarkable amounts of attention to me despite all the other distractions!

We are using 3 different treats at the moment: Zuke's salmon bits, Plato's chicken strips (cut small), and a few bits of Nature's Variety (I think) beef stick. Anyone else have good ideas for semi-moist treats for a dog who doesn't have the strongest stomach? The club recommended the beef stick for everyone, which Zoe loves, but I can't give her too much in fear of her getting diarrhea. They recommended the Zuke's and Plato when I mentioned her tummy troubles, and she seemed to do alright with the mix of the three (so far, so good!).

She has some GREAT classmates! Three of the dogs are younger than her--a kuvasz, a sibe, and an awesome 5-month old St. Bernard (Max) who is just the most playful little (big) thing. He's already twice the size of Zoe. There is also a catahoula mix, a couple of GSDs, a brown Doberman, a cock-a-poo, a westie, and a slightly dog-aggressive min pin (smallest dog at the place but boy did he make the room NOISY). I love meeting the other people's dogs, too--such a great mix of classmates!

So I was proud of Zoe because she had the best (most consistent) sit and because she didn't go to the bathroom inside (3 other dogs did, and 2 of them were poo!! ). I still think she's a bit immature to really excel at "paying attention to me," but hopefully this class will help a lot. We're not going to do competitive obedience or anything, but we would like to do enough so that she can get her CGC, do some basic agility, and possibly someday become a therapy dog (when she's much older and has settled down).

I'll try to keep this updated about how the class goes. We're working on attention mostly for our homework this week, which should be a good exercise for walks and when we're in the elevator!

Re: New Obedience Class

I used to like the Zuke's but if I left them in the pouch I use for treats they got really hard and stale.

Wellness has treats called Wellbites. They are soft little squares and I cut them up even smaller into four. My dog likes the beef and turkey (the duck gave her diarrhea.) I think they have pure meat treats but I buy the pkg that has carrots, apples, sweet potato in the mix also.

Sounds like Zoe will have fun at obedience. We shall be waiting for a progress report

Well you just settled me alittl bit.. lol Madison starts Beg. Obedience on nov 17th. we had to wait until she was healthy to get her spayed, and wait for her to heal before we could. And i was so nervous since she never got the puppy class that we would be behind on the skills... looks like she should be ok though!

Re: New Obedience Class

Alvin is not the most treat motivated dog I've ever met, so I have to really up the ante when I'm teaching him something new. As such, when we go to group classes of any kind, I buy a roasted chicken from Ralphs and rip it up into tiny pieces. He would do anything for a piece of this chicken. My taxes, perhaps.

I will try that in April.

Another thing you can use is take a small ziplock baggie of chopped up cheese and hot dogs. Another great training treats. And if it's going to be warm, you can get one of those things you put in a freezer and freeze it, then put it in the bottom of an insulated waist pouch and put the baggie of goodies on top of the frozen block. Works great.

Re: New Obedience Class

Anything that's good for you is good for your dog. There are a couple of things you can do...don't feed her shortly before you do a training session; she probably won't want any treats if you do. Use something she doesn't get all the time, such as boiled chicken, cheese (some places sell low-sodium and low-fat cheese), hot dogs (skinless and chicken/turkey ones are good), carrots, and anything your dog likes (some dogs love certain foods and you can use those, but don't ever give a dog chocolate, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, or onions as they're toxic to dogs). Only use these foods for training, and that may give her more motivation. Always use praise, as eventually you're going to start giving treats on an intermittent basis, and eventually phase them out once she's reliably doing as you ask her (but never phase out the praise, and once in a while, do some reinforcement training with the treats for the things she's already learned).

Your class should also have some play time in it; we let the dogs play when they first come in; after a bit they get a potty break and more play time, then after more training they get more play time. Classes run an hour, so this gives them plenty of time for training and it's not too much to where they lose any motivation to train.

Re: New Obedience Class

I buy cheap $.50 cent hot dogs and cut them up in small pieces, I bought a $.99 cotton apron from home depot to dispense them, my pockets didnt enjoy the hot dogs, Cash starts basic obedience in about 3-4 weeks If your dog is food motivated it will do anything for a bite of the hotdog, my trainer says they were made for training class and not human consumption
