Cool Train To Bark

Hi, I'm new here. I have the cuuutest Shi Tzu on earth. His name is Toby. He's a very smart dog!! I've trained him some, but there is one more thing that I want to train him to do. That is do beg..as in..bark when he wants to go to the bathroom!! He doesnt pee in the house, so he waits till I take him out. But it would be nice to get him to bark or somehow ask me when he wants to go out. Any suggestions?

Does he know the "speak" command? If so, you could start by having him speak for you before you let him out to potty.

Or, for a barkless approach you can try a doggie doorbell. You could probably make your own for really cheap. This web site has a how to "train" spot on the upper right. Have fun!

For my dog I basically just got her so excited that she barked. For her, all I had to do was look at her and wind her up and start excitedly saying something along the lines of "Speak?" If she would bark, then I'd praise her and give her a treat.

For other dogs, it might take holding up a favorite toy, an offer to play, a favorite treat, etc. while giving the command.

Haha...yah..my dog NEVER barks..unless there's another dog around! Our neighbors dog comes around sometimes and he starts barking at their dog so maybe I'll try that. Thanks again!

I wouldn't encourage him to bark at other dogs, even to try and teach him to speak. >^^;<

Perhaps if he's not a real barker, you could try that doggie doorbell thing.
