Angry Never had this sort of Soiling and peeing problem, any help?

Ok I have a dog that is now a 18 week 20kg utonagan can be seen here:

http://www.dogforums.com/8-dog-pictu...my-shadow.html (Time to show of my Shadow the utonagan)

At the start I let her sleep in her bed in our living room but she wouldn’t stop peeing near her bed on our carpet, so now what I have done is worked her slowly into the kitchen with our gate fence and she sleeps well in the kitchen on a tiled floor so me moving her nice and slowly in stages worked.

BUT the Soiling and peeing hasn’t stopped in the day she is great and goes out with me in the garden but at night I let her out at around midnight and she can do a poo and a wee (not all the times she does a poo) but weather she does both or not she still does them at night near her bed, now last night I went down at 3am but after that she still did it.

I have always managed to stop a dog with the night time Soiling and peeing in less than 3 weeks of getting them, but with her she just carries on and we got her at 7 weeks old

Things I have tried:

1. Paper with puppy training spray (she rips it all up)
2. Pepper on floor (this worked for 1 night)
3. I have removed from scented places why we fix it all up as noted above.
4. Feeding early for a tea feed (doesn’t change a thing)

Now my g/f says that maybe doing to big feeds instead of 3 smaller ones will even the pooing out as she only poo's a little but often, but I cant remember what age to go on a 2 feed routine.

Can any one help on this as I am going nuts.

My pup is about the same age as yours. I can't imagine not crating her at night and getting up once or twice with her during the night.

We've had no "accidents" for a couple of weeks with that regimen.

Please don't try to paper train AND train the dog to go outside. It's either or - not both. The dog will only get confused.

Agree with Ron... you can't paper train AND have the dog do biz outside. Its confusing for the dog.

Crate training is the best. Safest for your home AND most of all safe for the dog. He won't get into mischief & possibly hurt himself when you are not there. Sleeps in the crate at night, too. Crating is a must until your dog has proven that he won't do biz in the house.

Feed 2x a day, breakfast & dinner. At 18 weeks NO WAY he needs to eat 3x a day! Outside immediately after eating to poop & pee, etc. Give a treat after the pooping outside (reinforces good behavior) If he won't poop for some reason, put him back in the crate & take him out every 20 min. until he does, or even better, take him for a walk. In the evening: no water after 9:00 PM. take the bowls up. Out to pee immediately before bed and then into the crate, which is by your bed. (I have always used 2 crates - 1 for the downstairs and 1 for the bedroom and it works great).

Lucy our puppy is now about the same age as yours and she goes all night, from like 10:30pm or 6:30-7:00 AM without going outside.

Understand how frustrating this can be! Good luck. That is a very handsome looking dog you have - I looked at the pics.

Re: Never had this sort of Soiling and peeing problem, any help?

i disagree with the above poster. really, most dogs are good on 3 meals a day untill 9 months of age. right now, you have a puppy, and its best to keep the meals small and frequent. my dane will probably always be on 3 meals a day though because shes a giant breed and it will help protect her against bloat. but really, theres no need to cut down to 2 meals untill the growth slows down. 18 wks is NOT an older puppy.
as far as the pooing, what are you feeding? a higher quality food will reduce the amount and fequency of pooing. lower grades have so many fillers that go right through the pup and you get more pooing more often. i feed 3 times a day and my pup poos 3 times a day, sometimes 4.
as far as the weeing. take up the water 2 hours before bedtime. this will help because your pup isnt getting all that water close to bedtime, and having to go at night.
definately get a crate though. its the best way to potty train. also, if you cant get one right this minute, instead of pepper, try some vinegar. put it in a spray bottle and spray it lightly. they dont like the smell of it very much and it helps deter them from going potty there. but before you spray that, get an enzyme spray to clean the floor with. this will remove the odors you cant smell, but your pup can. being able to smell this tells pup "ok i went here before, so i can do it again"

Re: Never had this sort of Soiling and peeing problem, any help?

Thank you for all the above posts, I will be sticking to 3 feeds I just couldnt remember what I did with my to old dogs lol

As for "paper train AND have the dog do biz outside. Its confusing for the dog." I have always done this in the past as when the dog gets used to the paper at night and its gone they dont do any of there biz as there spot isnt there, I will not be doing it now thogh as I do understand this.

Being in a bed in a smallish kitchen I have also always done, just this time I thought I would let her have the run first and now I changed this, I dont thing they do crates in that many places in the UK as I think mostly all people use dog beds here (I probly wrong)

Food I use Beta its a high price and grade food.

I think I will really have to work hard on the space I give her and really make a big prase her, also as for the water I have never thought of doing this as I have always had a worry that they should always have access to water, but I think I will start this as also this will show her that I am more of a pack leader as I will contrall her water aswell.

Any more tips will be great if others have them and again thank you for the help, and thanks for the nice words on the pictures

I agree with Ron about the crate training and the others about paper training.

I also want to say that I disagree about the feeding twice a day. At the age of 18 weeks your puppy has greater nutritional needs than he has stomach capacity. I would keep him on 3 meals per day until 8 or 9 mos. and then depending on his weight as he grows I might continue longer than that. My Flat Coats have a hard time gaining weight until they are about 18 mos. and until that time I find that keeping weight on them is difficult I generally will see how they are doing and keep them on additional meals until they start showing signs of weight stabilization.

Re: Never had this sort of Soiling and peeing problem, any help?

well I did the water job last night and she didnt pee or poo, but I think it could have been look I have done the same tonight as last night and will see how all goes

I have always been unsure of crates, I understand the use of them but have always had my dogs in a bed so will see how things go over the next week or 2 at max and take it from there, thanks all

i crate trained my pup, and now she sleeps in bed. its better to move them into bed AFTER being housetrained because then you dont wake up to those late night wet spots....eew....

Re: Never had this sort of Soiling and peeing problem, any help?

will have to see how she goes as last night she di 1 poo and 2 wee's

might end up crate training her if she carries on but will have to see where I can get a crate this big.

For the amount of poo's a day she is really bad as today aloan she has already done 6 poo's and yester day she did about 7 including the one in the night, so is this a little high for a dog to be pooing this much?

That's VERY high. Even if it's a good brand of food, it might not agree with her.

A wee and a poo again last night she went out at midnight also, I am thinking we could use our baby gate and fence round her bed as a crate Idea but I am a little scared it might make things go the wrong way in a big way if I do as I never done anything like that :[

I wouldn't do that just yet- get at least a week of this routine working before you give her more freedom.

I placed the fence around the bed witch gave her less freedom and last night worked nothing was left for me, the only thing she did was bark at 7am as I think she really wanted to go, so when I let her out she did both so hopfully she will carry this on but go that bit longer to 8am as thats when I get up

Ok two nights with her in my home made fanced crate and touch wood she hasnt done anything at night yet, just hope it stays this way and no barking till late morning also yet

If any one wants to see an image of what I have done with the fence and bed I can take a picture, also its a good idea as she will be used to her bed and then I can always use the gate/fence for something else after
