Smile Casey Update

Casey is still driving us nuts! She is put in time out about a dozen times a day. The choke collar is working better for walks but takes about 5 minutes for her to settle down. Casey will sit, speak, roll over, lay down, and paw, fetch, cook, clean, do laundry, well maybe I am exaggerating just a little. But only when she really wants to. I am controlling her with an iron hand. Not allowing her to get away with anything. I will constantly move forward 3 steps to go backwards 4 steps 3 days later. Casey is extremely stubborn and wants her own way all the time. Her latest behavior is, "I wont go out unless you come too!" "But once I get out, I want to stay out and swim and play but you cant go in or I will bark my head off!" She torments the cat, chews on her paws and makes them raw, tips over the dog food while in the middle of eating, has flooded the kitchen(not too much) while pushing the water button on the fridge while also ejecting icecubes. She has broken 3 door handles and can bark with a muzzle and E collar on! The Petsmart trainer (Also rescue dog trainer) says that ,"Casey is extremely intelligent, very stubborn and refuses to be controlled. Three training class sesssions later, we are no better off then when we first arrived. Petsmarts General Manager felt so bad for me said I can go for free as long as I want or as long as it takes. But casey became too bored with it and started acting up. So we wont be going back anytime soon.
So, enough said, We had a family meeting to see whether Casey was going to get the boot. No, by unanimous decision, Casey gets to stay. Although she has her problems and she is driving Me personally nuts, She is part of our family and she is here to stay. I guess we just have to make the best of the situation! We can always look at the positives, Our friends will invite us to their house because they cant stand caseys constant barking and jumping up on them like she hasn't seen these people in years! The kids will have to entertain in their rooms so I have the big TV all to myself. And Finally, the kids show up to the dinner table on the first call so that they wont take the risk of their plate of food being eaten, licked or sneezed on by Casey. Casey's deficiencies made my children and husband more efficient! I just dont have the money or drive to fight her anymore!

Re: Casey Update

Have you sought out an actual Animal Behaviorist? I used to work at a clinic where one would come in at night after the regular clinic closed. She was a DVM as well as a Behaviorist, who went to Texas A&M. She was fabulous at figuring out what to do with problem dogs, she loved it. I would really try to find someone in your general area that you can set an appointment with. They may be expensive, but you usually don't have many appointments with them, just a few so they can evaluate your dog and come up with a game plan.
Dr. McInnis found very few dogs to have actual health/phyisical problems, but she always made the owner get their dog checked out just to make sure there was no underlying health problem causing the behavior.
Someone that has actually devoted their life to animal behavior, not just training, is what you need to help figure out what you can do to help your pup.

Re: Casey Update

Two things you have to rule out before you go any further...hyperthyroidism and a constant sugar high. Both can create a hyper, out of control dog and no amount of training/rehab will work. You said the paw licking started after a bug bite (may have been a coincidence) but, are you absolutely sure it's not food allergies? Cereals/grains are notorious for food allergies and and can produce sugar highs. Your vet can check the thyroid levels.

I'm not at all impressed with your trainer. You can do better. Good trainers don't assign emotionally connotative language to a dog's behavioral problems.

Secondly, get her the heck OFF that choke chain. Prongs are MUCH safer and more humane, even if they look scary.
