| first time owner trying to train a puppy I bought my daughter a morke for her graduation. Usual story I do most of teh work, but I don't mind because I really adore her. The only problem is that I am not good at training the puppy. She is already five months old and is still urinating all over the house. I have bought wee wee pads, and I walk her outside. Still she will come right back in and leave a puddle. I have been told to kennle train her but am not quite sure how to go about doing this. I don't like scolding her but if i must I will.
Help!!! |

| Re: first time owner trying to train a puppy Kennel training is not a punishment. The kennel represents a "den" for the dog where it can feel safe. They also like to keep their den clean and usually will not soil in it. Read the above sticky but here are some of the basics.
The dog is never allowed to roam on his own.
Keep a journal of when you feed and when they do their business. This way you can set up a schedule. Do not free feed.
I would let Riley out of his kennel after about an hour when I first got him and then take him outside. I would treat and praise if he peed or pooped. Then I would let him play inside while I watched him like a hawk. If he showed any signs of having to go again I would take him outside. If I couldn't watch him he went back into the kennel or I would tether him to my belt/leash.
Give him lots of exercise. |

| Re: first time owner trying to train a puppy As stated the dog shouldn't be left alone to wander thru the house. If you can't follow her every move then put her leash on and tie it to your belt so you can keep her in eye sight. You can also restrict her space to just one room that has been puppy proofed after she has gone potty so you can go and do other things. Also, as stated, you should keep track how long it takes for her to go pee after she drinks water and how long it takes after she eats for her to go poop. That way you can know when to take her out. Then bring some treats that she really likes but only for going potty outside and when she goes give her lots of praise and saying "good girl" and then give her lots of treats. And say "go potty" while she is going so that after awhile she will know what it means and you can say that command when you only have enough time to take her out to go potty before you got to go somewhere or if its freezing cold outside or raining and then she will go and you can run back inside. Also it may be good if you've got some time to just wait her out till she goes or if you can't wait then put her back in her crate, wait about 10 to 15 min, then take her back outside and try again. So she will get the idea.

but anyway, are you cleaning the spots with an enzyme cleaner to discouraging her from going in the house? how often are you taking her out? Does she have access to water all the time? Has she been checked by the vet for urinary trac problems? Has she been spayed? etc

| Re: first time owner trying to train a puppy I believe the poster meant a "Morkie", which is a yorkie/maltese cross. The point would be that it is a cross of two small breed dogs, and so any advice on housebreaking small breeds would be useful. In addition to sticking to a very strict water and potty schedule and working on crate training, I would suggest that you try to take a training class. They usually meet once a week for 6-8 weeks and you can usually find classes through PetSmart or the local animal shelter or SPCA for decent prices. Especially if you go to a puppy class, the trainer will likely address issues like crates and housebreaking. But even if you go to a basic obediance class, you will learn a lot about dog training and building a good training relationship with your dog. I, too, am a first time dog owner and really did not have much idea on how to train my puppy, but I've grown a lot more confident in understanding dog training and behavior since we went to puppy kindergarten. We are still going to take more obediance classes, as I think they are very helpful, but a basic puppy K will teach you basics of rewards systems, timing, techniques, etc.
Good luck with your dog! Let us know what you decide to do and how it goes. |

| Re: first time owner trying to train a puppy How could anyone buy a Morkie without a Mindie? Let's see who figures that one out.
I highly recommend that you enroll in a puppy school yesterday. There should also be a sticky at the top of one of the forums on housetraining. If you're not good at training the dog, find someone who can show you. Now is not the time to train haphazardly. Good luck! |
