Question about Pee Pads

I've always heard that they're not good if you're trying to eventually break the dog to go only outdoors. My 5 month-old can't hold himself for 9 hours while I'm away & normally goes in the uncarpeted room he's left in during the day (it opens up to his big crate, which he rarely even tinkles in now).

LOL, he frequently pees on my TREADMILL! Before you shriek (and I do run on it), every morning before I leave, it's layered from bottom to top with garbage bags, old towels and sheets to that it doesn't soak through. I come home, peel off the layers & throw them in the wash!

If I switch to pee pads, will this confuse him -- lol, anymore than the padded treadmill will?

I am not usually a fan of pee pads. I personally find them disgusting and confusing for the dogs.

Is a dog walker or day care an option for you? Do you have a neighbor that can let him out during the day? What about a doggy door, that leads into a small potty area?

If none of these are an option, I guess pee pads are about your only option. I have never used them, but if I were going to. I would put my dog in one, non carpets room, with toys, food, water and the pee pads. Let him have that room only, so he NEVER thinks its ok to go in the rest of the house.

Have you tried crating? Maybe the dog actually can hold it, but chooses not to because they've got this big convenient room to pee in. Depends on the breed and individual dog - I know our 5-month old can hold it that long in her crate, but if she had an entire room to herself she would probably take advantage of it.

I think pee-pads are necessary for some situations but not ideal. It will be hard to break her of the habit later on, but if it's the only option than it's the only option! It's not like you are the first person to use them so I'm sure it will work out OK.

If your going to use a puppy pad, definatly find one that fits into the pad holders.

Its like a plastic barrier around the edges, if not you will more then likely comehome to shredded pad with urine all over it.
