Bells to alert potty needs

In the past and more recently, even, I've seen people talk about hanging bells on their doors, so the dogs of the home can alert the owners as to when they need to go outside.

Has anyone here heard of this, or have you had any measure of success in it?

I have heard different stories both good and bad. The good is the have a way to tell you they want out, the bad, is they use it even when they dont need to potty. It can get annoying.

I've never tried it, but like All4thedogs mentioned, I can only imagine it might turn into a bell-ringing bonanza in your house. The dog would think, hey everytime I ring this bell, humans come running to see me! Perfect!

Thumbs up

Yes, I did this with my dog. She caught on right away, and though she does misuse it sometimes, it is a great way to alert me! She was having a really hard time before I did this trying to think up ways to tell me she had to go out, but since I have put the bells on the door she hasn't had one accident inside. I definately recommend the bell technique!

Oh yeah, and have your dog on some sort of potty schedule at first so he learns that using the bell is only for going potty, don't let him play when you let him out, if he doesn't potty within 1 minute of going outside bring him back inside and ignore him when he rings it and you know he doesn't have to go. They catch on pretty quick to only use it when they have to go potty.
