Unhappy Potty question

Hi all

We just rescued a sweet 3 year old chow mix from the local shelter. He's got a wonderful disposition, very compliant and loving EXCEPT...

we're having some potty issues. We're trying to train him to go in the yard like our other dog did. So far, we've been successful at getting him to pee at the same time in the evening, but only once a day. Is it normal for a male dog to pee only ONCE a day? (Our other dog was female.) We take him out many times a day to the same spot and let him walk around, but he just kind of sits here.

And no matter what we do, we can't get him to poop in the yard. He'll hold it in for days. Then, he'll go in the family room....

HELP!

Re: Potty question

First thing...go get a complete vet exam. Take along a fresh stool specimen so they can check for parasites too.

Re: Potty question

Thanks, briteday. But he had his complete physical the week before we picked him up at the shelter (last week) and was given a clean bill of health in all areas. I think it's probably the new surroundings.
