Agility Training for a Poodle

How can I train my 2 yr poodle to do agility for fun? Where should I start? I have been getting her to jump over a log that is laying down in our yard. She does great and seems to like it. but gets tired quickly. How do you go about make your own jumps? Thanks for any feedback

I would try to find some local classes for agility. It looks really easy but there's all kinds of tips and tricks that you need to learn so that your dog doesn't fear an obstacle or get hurt. It really isn't a good idea to train your own dog the first time around.

Taking classes is certainly the best way to go. Be careful about asking your dog to do too many repetitions of the same thing. They slow down when they get bored (doing the same thing over and over) and also from over exertion....you don't want either one in your training.
A tire jump can be made from a hula hoop suspended between two poles; PVC pipe makes great jumps..just be sure they can be knocked off their pegs in case the dog hits it; inexpensive, nylon play tunnels are available at Toys R Us; a pause table can be almost any flat surface raised off the ground a few inches. Be careful on the assembly so there are no sharp edges, screws or nails sticking out or, holes in the ground where you and your dog are running.

You can buy agility equipment, or make your own from PVC. Poodles can do really well in agility, but I would recommend that you go visit a class. If you start teaching your Poodle things, then decide to enroll her in an agility class, you will have confused her from the beginning by not doing things correctly.

In the meantime, you can do a lot of things to increase endurance, build muscle, and enhance dexterity. For the latter, I placed a large plank across 3 cement blocks (one at each end, and one in the middle), and had my dogs walk forward, then backward, increasing the speed as we progressed. This really helps body awareness, and my male, who used to hit shoulders or his hips when going through doors too fast, is no longer my "bull in a china closet," LOL he's as graceful as a ballerina! My female can leap over the picnic table out back, clearing it by a good foot or more.
