Re: Drinking Mess

I'm not sure where Rotties are on the list of top droolers, but I have a Mastiff and I know that they rank pretty high. The best thing to do that I have found is keeping drool rags within reach at all times. I wipe off his mouth after he drinks water in the house. Otherwise, I will have it coating the walls. It works pretty well. Our floor does get wet to some extent. He knows that he gets his mouth wiped now after he drinks and will come to me to have it wiped off. I got him used to it right away.

Re: Drinking Mess

what a great idea. a larger bowl for the smaller bowl. brilliant. our one labs leaves more on the floor than what goes down her throat.

Re: Drinking Mess

Actually, None of my Rottweilers have been much in the way of droolers. Unless of course it is for comedy relief. They do have quite the sense of humor. Often at their owners expense. LOL

Ummmmmm......NO, but thanks for looking out for me

I also have 2 American Staffordshire Terriers in the house. I have to keep a lot of water, especially lately with the Atlanta area having a record number of days over 100F (and humid). Even with them in the house all day, they still drink a lot more water. You can see the primary water bowl below (and the other two dogs), there are two more bowls in the house.

The mop just is more happy that it gets more attention.

Actually, I have been looking for a rubbermaid mat that holds water. Will let you know what I find.

Re: Drinking Mess

My pup (lab/shepherd) now 4 months used to try and splash all the water out with his paws then roll in it, which was causing a serious mess everywhere!!! I simply stopped putting so much water in the dish, I had to fill it every 1/2 hour or so but after about 2 weeks he stopped and I don't have the problem anymore.
1 mess/problem down soo many more to go

Mina used to do that as well. She still does that if you use a plastic bowl to give her water (hence the big metal bowl). I did break her of that by just telling her NO when she was splashing and then praising her when she was just drinking. I do fill up a kiddie pool in the back yard and let her splash around with it, which is hours of entertainment in itself.

Re: Drinking Mess

If that's your biggest problem....you're lucky! My old lab was a complete mess every time he drank. He would hold the water in his jowls and we literally had to stand behind him with a dry mop and clean up after him. I miss him so much and would give anything to have to have that ugly mop leaning against the wall in my kitchen again. I wouldn't even try to correct it - just smile and be prepared to clean!
