The crazy cujo howl/bark is back!

Some of you may remember that my papillon Lilly came on vacation with us end of June to a lake side cabin for a week.....her 1st time on vacation and at 2 times near the end of the week 1 little girl who stayed 3 feet away asked to pet her and Lilly went into a cujo rage, uncontrollable barking and howling so I told the girl no petting and she walked away but Lilly was in such a tizzy she continued and I had to carry her back to the cabin to calm her down. Then a couple days later same thing, different kid - a boy, walking past him on the road about 5-6 feet away, Lilly saw him and went into cujo rage. Now she had been pet by other children much to her disliking but I instructed them on how to properly do it, to get on her level, be slow and quiet, etc....and when she backed away they were instructed to stop.

So since then we have gone to our pet stores like usual, one instance kids came up I instructed them how to approach her and I held Lilly. Lilly did well, no barking and then decided "I'm done" and snapped at the little girl, not hard, just to say "no more touching". It upset the little girl but I said "Thank you for helping her like kids, she just gets upset when she's tired." But no barking. In fact like I've said before she never barks and is soooo quiet.

So just yesterday we took her out of town with us but the house we were going to will not allow dogs so Lilly stayed down the road at a doggie day care; which she hated and shook the minute I handed her over. Long story short, picked her up 8 hours later and we went with family to an ice cream place down the road and sat outside, etc..etc... She was fine and just loving my mom who is one of her favorite people. Then a little boy, like 5 or 6 years old comes by and asks what kind of dog. I'm thinking great more exposure to calm children, yeah! Well I told him her name and to let her sniff his hand very slowly....etc. Well Lilly seemed interested and was in my arms. Well, the little boy walked forward and was about 3 feet away and AGAIN....cujo howling barking Lilly appears!! It was nuts. She gets so crazy my husband had to pick her up and walk away.

She has never had a bad experience with a child. I know their hyperness and loudness scares her but I always correct that when they come near her. She has never ever had this reaction to an adult. In fact she turns over for a belly rub with every adult.

I am thinking of calling a behaviorist to help work on this simply b/c I take her everywhere and need her to not have these random outbursts but how can they work on a behavior only invoked so randomly and only by kids.

Any thoughts?? I was thinking that the 2 times it happened we were in new places. Could that be it?? Is she not scared of the child but rather sees them as a threat to me??

What do you think??

Well since you were in new places that should make it better since she is in a neutral ground. Perhaps you have a young family member that you know you can trust not to sue you and see if she calms down as he or she gets closer and to keep giving the dog treats so it will associate the treat with children.

I was having some behavioral issues myself, and would sometimes get hurt in the process. My mom called BarkBusters. My mom never did get use their services, but she did get some great advice just from making the call and talking to the trainer. I hate to say it... but I've been pretty good since then. I think my mom had a paradigm shift after talking to the barkbusters trainer.

Good luck with that.
