Help - I'm confused

Hello I'm looking for some advice!

I am picking up a lurcher puppy at the end of September and in trying to prepare myself for puppy hood I have been reading up about various training methods for house training and training in general. To tell you the truth I am completely confused as to which would be the best training methods to use for my pup - any advice would be greatly appreciated as I seem to be going round in circles in my head and would like make the right decision for my pup going forward!

I look forward to hearing other's views!

Thanks.

There is probably 101 hints and tips on how to potty train a dog. Keep in mind that they are "hints and tips". I would read all of them and find out what works best for you and your puppy and then stick with it.

The trick is consistency. That's my tip.

I'm not sure what methods you are looking at, but in my mind there is basically one successful method that is most used today. That is positive reinforcement training - AKA reward-based training. It may not work for every single dog but with a new, moldable puppy I think it's the best place to start.

You can carry out pos-reinforcement training using your voice ("YES! Good girl") or using a clicker.

In my opinion, I would search for a good site that describes clicker training and use that method. Alot of people have had great success with it.

As far as potty training, get a crate. Find a book/DVD that describes crate training and use it. It is the best decision we made with our puppy!! It helps a lot!

All dogs are different but I would suggest trying the ones that will be the most convienient and easiest for you first.

Every puppy is different, but I have always had wonderful luck with crate training. Along with positive reinforcment it is an invaluble tool. Be sure your pup gets plenty of exercise, attention and love, and you will be set.
