Obviously the dog is not house broken, which means you'll have to do it.
Ideally you should be crate training as well, it makes house breaking so much easier. Take your dog outside first thing int the morning, right before bed, after every meal, and about every 2-3 hours. You'll need to go outside with your dog to make sure he's doing his business and not just smelling the flowers. Everytime he poops outside, tell him good dog and give him LOTS OF PRAISE!
If you catch him having an accident in the house, tell him in a stern voice NO and take him outside imedietly, as soon as he does his buisness outside give him lots of praise. If you don't catch him having an accident, just clean up the mess with an enzymatic cleaner and forget about it.
The benefits of the crate training are that you'll have a safe place to put him when he can't be supervised. And if he does have an accident while he's in the crate, he'll soon realise that it wasn't such a good idea.

Hitting a doy for any reason is NEVER acceptable and will only lead to problems down the road. If you lash out physicaly when you angry or upset your dog, just like a child, will soon learn that it's acceptable to lash out when they get upset. For a dog this usually translates into bitting and becoming an uncontrollable mess when he gets upset.
