dog p@@ps on couch. WHY?

okay this is my first post, so hello everyone.

well here is my story.

i just got this dog and he likes to p@@p whereever he sleeps. on the couch, on the chair, on the blanket on the floor. i have hardwood floors, and my other dogs never p@@p in the house. maybe a accident every now and then. but thats it. i have told the new dog that this is bad. especialy when i see him doing it. its crazy. i thought dogs would never p@@p where they eat or sleep.

if anyone out there has any ideas why he does this, i would appriciate the opinions. for example, is this a dominence thing? a teritorial thing? also any tips on training him not to do this would be great.

i have 2 other dogs, and i have had tons of experience with other dogs, cats, horses, cows, goats, the list goes on and on. never had one p@@p on the furniture.

thanks in advance

Re: dog p@@ps on couch. WHY?

Simple. He poops on the couch and everywhere else (BTW, the word "poop" is not censored here. You can say it) because he hasn't been shown consistently where the right place to poop is. It sounds to me like he has too much freedom if he's able to poop all over the place. If you don't already have one, a crate can be a wonderful thing for preventing this.

You haven't given much information about the dog. How old is he? How long have you had him? What do you do when you catch him pooping? What do you do when you find the poop later on? What do you use to clean it up? What do you do when he poops outside where he's supposed to?

I don't have much advice that won't repeat what Cheetah already mentioned. I just have to say that I sympathize. Last week, my Mastiff PEED on my couch!

If he specifically poops where he's sleeping, he may have an incontinence problem.

every time he poops in the wrong place, scold him (spanking is a strict no!) so he knows its wrong. he'll learn soon that he's not suppoesed to poop within the house. take him out regularly, just for 5 minutes or so about every couple of hours so he can releive himslef outside

Re: dog p@@ps on couch. WHY?

Obviously the dog is not house broken, which means you'll have to do it.

Ideally you should be crate training as well, it makes house breaking so much easier. Take your dog outside first thing int the morning, right before bed, after every meal, and about every 2-3 hours. You'll need to go outside with your dog to make sure he's doing his business and not just smelling the flowers. Everytime he poops outside, tell him good dog and give him LOTS OF PRAISE!

If you catch him having an accident in the house, tell him in a stern voice NO and take him outside imedietly, as soon as he does his buisness outside give him lots of praise. If you don't catch him having an accident, just clean up the mess with an enzymatic cleaner and forget about it.

The benefits of the crate training are that you'll have a safe place to put him when he can't be supervised. And if he does have an accident while he's in the crate, he'll soon realise that it wasn't such a good idea.

Hitting a doy for any reason is NEVER acceptable and will only lead to problems down the road. If you lash out physicaly when you angry or upset your dog, just like a child, will soon learn that it's acceptable to lash out when they get upset. For a dog this usually translates into bitting and becoming an uncontrollable mess when he gets upset.

Re: dog p@@ps on couch. WHY?

Did you get this dog from a Humane Society or somewhere where the dog was kept in a small confined place and not taken out? I have seen several dogs from these situations that were just in the habit of going where they happened to be since they had not ever been taken out. I agree that a crate is the best option at this point. Frequent potty breaks outside and enormous praise when successful outdoors. Best of Luck!
