Cool K9 - Cooling Jacket

Alright - so Lakota finally got to wear his cooling coat by Cool K9 this weekend. How does it work? Well....honestly I didn't notice a difference in his usual behavior - he still got very hot. However, I did feel his body that was under the coat and it was most definately very cool - but with all his insulating fur I honestly don't know if it's beneficial or not!

Any other opinions? Experience?

Re: Cool K9 - Cooling Jacket

I don't like cool down coats and won't use them. They can actually trap heat in and cause the dog to overheat. The best way to cool a dog is water and a breeze. I start with their ears and their undersides since there are a lot of blood vessels in those areas to increase heat evaporation from the skin. If it's really hot and there's no breeze to speak of I avoid wetting down the entire dog as a steam bath can be the result (I imagine it'd be even moreso a problem with longer coated breeds that can hold more water in their coat).

The most important protection I give my dogs is to condition them to working in the heat. Of course, I have a breed with desert origins LOL But, their high muscle mass = more heat when exercising so it's a catch 22. I also avoid activity during the hottest times of day.

I haven't seen this type of cooling vet before. I have seen the ones that go underneath the dog like the type they use in the military and those bandanas.

Hi ! SunSiberians ,
I like your dog , and you dog definately cool after wearing this cool jacket - coat . For me , i think not necessary to put a coat on your dog .
I believe that dogs will find their own way if the weather is hot or cool .
You can wrap them with a towel soaked with cool water or keep the air circulating with a fan or air conditioner in your house .
