| Our Dog is Killing Our Grass! We just landscaped our new home with new grass and our female boxer kills/burns the grass with her pee everytime she goes. We have tried several different pill products, but nothing seems to work. I have not spoken to our Veterinarian about it, but just wondering if anybody has and ideas as to what we might try. Please help?
FYI-I found our Veterinarian though a cool website for pet owners looking for a veterinarian, called Veterinarian-Pages. All the vet hospitals have links to their website and have lots of pet health and wellness information. I highly recommend checking that site out if you are looking for a veterinarian.

| Re: Our Dog is Killing Our Grass! Hey there!
My brother has 2 boxers, a male and a female. The female (Alice) has done a number on his lawn as well. He has also tried a number of different pills and nothing has worked.
It's funny because the male (Mugsy) doesn't seem to have any effect on the lawn at all!!!
I think it might just be a "female" thing. Do you have any where close by that can walk her? I know my brother takes them to park so they can do there thing there.
If I hear of any solution I'll let you know.
Good luck!

Jess | If I remember correctly, female urine pH is significantly lower than males (I think optimal range for females is around 6.0 while males tend to be 6.5 or higher). This increase in acidity would definitely affect the grass more. I wouldn't recommend giving anything to change the pH of their urine, as the balance is VERY important to their urinary tract health. If it drops too low/high, you can get formation of crystals in the urine. This is much more common in cats (must be between 6-6.5), but it happens in dogs too(has a high healthy range from 6.0-8.0). If it's an issue, maybe teach them to pee on the sidewalk instead of on your grass, or make sure you are having them pee at a different spot every time, so you don't repeatedly abuse that one patch of grass with acidic urine. |

| Re: Our Dog is Killing Our Grass! I would not give my dog anything to ingest. Instead, you can pour a solution of baking soda and water on the spot where your dog has just peed. This will neutralize the acidity of the urine and keep the grass from dying. I'm not sure if it will work on the burned grass--it might be too late by then. |

| Re: Our Dog is Killing Our Grass! My husband just uses fertalizer and maybe some grass seed. Our dogs do leave pee spots in the grass but i dont think it lasts very long. There is a big yellow spot where Cinnamon comes running around the tree in our yard. The only thing we can think of why its so yellow n dead is because thats where she runs through all the time. Oh well. |

| Re: Our Dog is Killing Our Grass! I've heard to water the spot where they pee as soon as they pee and that will stop it from killing the grass, not sure if it works or not. |

| Re: Our Dog is Killing Our Grass! Try FatCat stuffed Toys! They are Wonderful. They're made of a very tough Canvas material. A bit pricey but worth it. Here is the Website fatcatinc.com
My Labrador use to tear up all kinds of toys (stuffed, plasitc etc). within 15 minutes of giving them to her but these "FatCat" toys she just loves to play with and they last her a long long long time because they are almost indestructible. And if it gets a rip I just DeStuff them and she still loves to play with the toy. |

| Re: Our Dog is Killing Our Grass! I haven't ever tried any supplements or fertilizer-type things. However, if your dog is an indoor dog, I would recommend just starting to take her out on-leash and take her to one specific spot and stand there until she pees. After a while of doing this, she'll know that's the "toilet area" and won't pee anywhere else. You should do this with any other dogs you have, too, so their urine doesn't tell her to pee somewhere else. |

Also it isn't ph levels. WalkerDog's suggestion is explained in detail. http://plantanswers.tamu.edu/turf/do..._problems.html
When owners have reported successes, as is sometimes the case on internet forums, liquids likely improved the situation because the urine concentration after treatment was diluted. Safer ways to accomplish more dilute urine include feeding canned food, moistening dry food with water prior to feeding and adding salt or garlic salt to the regular food. One particular home remedy, tomato juice, likely has its primary benefit through both increased salt and water intake. While salt will make the dog drink more and dilute the urine, increased salt intake can cause problems for dogs with existing kidney or heart conditions. Owners should not alter their dog’s diet without consulting with their veterinarian.

| Re: Our Dog is Killing Our Grass! Both my dogs are male, one a mix and one a malamute. BOTH kill the grass if they pee on it.
Our previous home I just had them always go in the same spot, a corner of the yard that was never seen on the side of the house.
When we built this new house, I had the landscapers put pepples down one side of the house in teh backyard and we use that as a dog run. So no more killing my garden or grass |
