Do "brake-fast" bowls work for fast eaters?

I just wanted to know if anybody else has tried the "brake-fast" bowls or the dog dishes with prongs in the middle? We adopted another pup (a St. Bernard Mix) and he inhales his food in seconds! At first we thought he was just really hungry because he was recovering from his fight against parvo (He got sick with parvo less than 48 hours after we got him from the shelter). When we slowly switched his diet from the prescribed "bland" food to his regular food, he just ate his food up in about 15 seconds (we feed him 3 cups/day of nutro for giant breed pups). He is 3.5 months old and is about 30 lbs (I am not sure if this is "normal" since he has lost weight during his fight against parvo...the parvo incident is another whole new thread I'll have to post so I won't get into that right now ) Anyway, I am considering about purchasing the bowl for him but before I do, I just want to make sure that its worth the drive to get a $14-$20 bowl from across town (esp with gas prices ) and which size would be better for him? I am thinking medium so he can use it when he is bigger. Right now, I moisten his food and put one of his toy balls in his dish. This has slowed his eating but I have to keep a close eye on him because he tends to try to tip his bowl and has made attempts to take the ball out.
I'd really appreciate any helpful insights, suggestions, and comments.
Thanks!

Hate to say it, but they didn't work at ALL for my *deep breath* sisters boyfriend's lab (who's 9mo? now).

My dog used to eat like that -- I started using Kongs and this plastic ball that dispenses her food when she rolls it the right way so she can only access a little food at a time. I think she got used to it because now if I get lazy and feed her w/ the bowl she's fine with it and eats at a normal pace.

So if I buy the bowl, do I still need to moisten his food?
