Brush for Matted Hair

We just adopted a stray. She came with matted hair all over, especially behind her ears. She's our first long haired dog. We never had to deal with matting before. Is there a good brush that you recommend to get rid of the matting? Or is there a shampoo? I want it to be as little pain to her as possible.

Usually the easiest thing, and least painful, is to shave the dog to get rid of the matts. Then develop a schedule of brushing and such that keeps the dog's coat in good shape.

There are matt cutters and rakes available. But it is very time consuming and not pleasant for the dog.

What kind of dog is she?

Our new dog looks like a mix of Pomeranian and Mini Poodle. Thank you for your advice.

I use Show Sheen detangler for horses. You can get it at most feed or tack stores. It works so much better than anything I have found for dogs or humans. It keeps the hair from tangleing for about a week. You just spray it on dry and brush.
