Advice on dog toys for aggressive chewers

Hi all
I have a one year old schnoodle. I need some advice on toys. She pretty much destroys all of her toys. I am spending a small fortune! She loves to chew aggressively! The only toys she hasn't destroyed are her kongs and nylabones. She loves to play with plush toys but chews right through them to the stuffing in a matter of minutes! She loves (not sure of the name) the squeaky balls with the feet on them but chews off the feet. She really loves squeaky toys too-but again they dont last very long.

Also is it safe to put a kong toy in her crate even though she chews so aggressively. Could that be a choking hazard??

Anyone have any recommendations????

Re: Advice on dog toys for aggressive chewers

For most dogs, the heavy-duty black Kongs are pretty safe. They can be stuffed with a variety of goodies.

The most durable Nylabones (the ones labeled for agressive chewers) are pretty good.

Nylabone also makes a Kong look-alike called the Rinocone which holds up quite well.

I haven't found any others that pass the Esther-test (and one black Kong failed extravegantly and quickly.)

All toys should be supervised but, honestly, the reason we give our dogs Kongs is so they have something to occupy themselves when we're not around.

Try PetEdge.com or JeffersPet.com for toys specifically for aggressive chewers. They have some that look like tires and others that are made from fire hose material.

Yup, those sound promising, briteday, and both were quickly dispatched by Esther, (aka "Jaws.")

Oddly, she had a cheap Walgreens rubber squeak toy when we first adopted her. She had it for about ten days and, during that time, destroyed an extensive variety of sturdy-looking toys. For some reasons, she was very gentle with that squeak toy.

Then, one morning while I was in the shower, it stopped squeeking and I knew its time had come.

She's also very kind to real tennis balls. The fake ones, which look pretty real to me, don't last a minute.

Re: Advice on dog toys for aggressive chewers

I've only found a few products out there that my two don't destroy.

Kongs (apart from the balls, they last about 5 minutes). But my dogs don't like Kongs (the weird shaped ones anyway), so they probably haven't been wrecked simple because they're never played with or chewed on them. LOL

The Hartz "dumbell". I have 2 of them, and have had them for about 3 years now. The dogs play with them often, we even use them for tug, and they are still in good shape.

Jawz products. I have the balls and the ring (they come in all kinds of shapes), again, been over 2 years and they're still used frequently and and are in awesome shape.

But their all time fav, the toys they love the most that aren't ripped to shreds despite the constant chewing are Cuz's. I do have to saw the legs off as soon as I get them, cause they can rip those off, but the actual ball part holds up extremely well.

Other toys I've tried that were "supposed" to be for heavy chewers were the firehose toy, the black tire toys, these blue gel feeling toys (I think called Orka's), orbee balls, the rompee ball........and they were all destroyed within minutes, besides the rompee ball, which lasted about a week. I was actually really disappointed with the firehose toy, I paid a small fortune for it, and was told it was for seriously heavy duty chewers, yet PJ had ripped a hole in it the first time I threw it for him and just him catching it ripped a hole in it.

Check out these tough dog toys. We bought a squeaky wubba and the fire hose toys from them for our lab mix who loves plush squeaky toys, but takes the stuffing out in minutes. His favorite so far is the purple squeaky wubba. Not only is it more durable than we thought, it's also very easy to squeak.

I've heard the dental dinasaur works pretty well for aggressive chewers.

I believe this was the one http://www.petedge.com/Durable-Denta...ne-TF22101.pro

Well my dog used to bite aggressively, and what she likes most is the bone shaped plush toys. She could stay alone with her toys for almost one day! Fortunately, those toys are safe to her.

We didn't try the Kong Wubba, but did try the very similar Kong Snugga Wubba. It did not last. Our dog ripped it's insides out right away. She does still like the empty fleece cover. Guess that's the silver lining...

As far as chew toys that we can recommend... Our dog absolutely loves her Nylabone Turkey Leg from the Big Chews for Big Dogs line. She's a seven month old Great Dane, and this toy is her favorite and has really stood up to her abuse well. She always makes sure she has it with her.

Re: Advice on dog toys for aggressive chewers

My Bandit has the same problem. Loves plush toys way more than his other, more durable ones, but tears them apart in a matter of minutes. Luckily, we have a dog-obsessed friend that works at Planet Dog and she recommended a plush toy that he's had for MONTHS! that he loves and hasn't destroyed yet.

Here is a link to that part of their website! Hope it helps!

We have an obsessive compulsive German Shorthaired Pointer that will chew through everything, including Kongs and Buddy toys (which are supposed to be indestructible!). About the only thing we can leave lying around for him to chew on is a large size Nylabone, and we have to replace those frequently.

Petedge is great but for a regular person you have to spend $75.00 in order to purchase anything. Try muttmart.com. They have some awesome toys that are durable. I had the smae problem with my basset hound. I bought her a plush duck and that they was gone is 2 seconds.

Re: Advice on dog toys for aggressive chewers

This is a tough one. Our girl destroys just about anything we give her. About the only thing she doesn't chew is her kongs. Also, they're not chew toys, so I wouldn't recommend leaving the dog alone with them, but she doesn't seem to want to destroy her lighty ball (ball that lights up) or her racquet balls. She's content to sit and mouth them. Note -- our vet said not to give her tennis balls since they hurt the enamel on her teeth.

She has lots of toys but I don't give them to her unless I can be there with her to supervise. When she starts to destroy something, we switch to another toy. She's getting the idea that the rougher she is, the quicker I am to take things away, so she backs off if I tell her to be gentle. If I wasn't there, though, it would be curtains for whatever she got her mouth on.

I'm always on the lookout for new toys that she can't destroy -- I have a closet full of stuff she either isn't interested in or could choke on. Sigh...

Re: Advice on dog toys for aggressive chewers

Wow... I was just going to post the same thing.

Pepper is a little tiny thing (well, 11lbs) and boy can he go through toys!!! He loves squeaky toys, but I haven't found anything that holds up.

If it's a stuffed toy, he'll bite the spot with the squeaker until the squeaker breaks and then he starts trying to rip the toy to get the cotton out.

If it's a plastic toy, he'll run around and squeak it and then takes it to his "condo" and chews pieces off.

Luckily, he doesn't try to eat stuff, he bites it off and spits it out, but it makes me incredibly nervous so I either have to watch him constantly or put it away.

Thanks for posting the question... I'm off to check out various products.

Sid

If you locate something that you want on petedge I can get it for you without having to spend the $75. Tirebiters are also pretty good....our Belgian Malinois are quite the chewers and the tirebiter seems to last awhile.

Re: Advice on dog toys for aggressive chewers

Kong toys are awesome plus they are quite a few to choose from. The balls last longer then any of the other I've bought over the last few years and so don't the king wubbas.

I was spending a few hundred a month on plush toys at first, but my dogs chewed right through them. Plush toys at pet stores (petco & petsmart for sure) are pretty expensive too.

I know that some of the Four Paws hard chew toys have worked for our dog. She is also a serious chewer who manages to destroy almost anything we buy her. It seems she has the same addiction your dog has of pulling off anything that sticks out (like little feet or eyes...stuff like that). I have bought stuff at www.petedge.com and www.communitypetsupply.com and received some really good prices. Good luck!
