One of my dogs does that too, and some like to eat the dog nail clippings. Maybe it's like cow hooves. I also keep her from eating the hair, but occasionally a stray wisp will hit the floor before I can catch it, and it's gone in a flash.
It's kind of like having a dog food powered vacuum cleaner.

Not really, did they say what the theory was behind it? I did a quick search, and among other tips for the use of baking soda is one saying to put a small amount of baking soda in beans while soaking them and that will reduce flatulence. So maybe that's what they meant?
