Outrageous!

Just wanted to vent about what happened at work today...pretty darn upsetting if you ask me...or anyone at my vet office...

This guy came in this morning with a literally new born puppy that he thought was premature. He had the mother (in labor) in the car and told us she had been in labor all night.

Both vets drop what they are doing to take care of this tiny pup. We come to find out from one of the vets that these pups are several days premature...he thinks it's 5 or 6 days. They heard terrible sounds where the breathing should be and said that the puppy's lungs were not fully developed. They wanted to euthanize it because it was way too premature and the doctor explained to the guy that there was no way this puppy would make it...it was basically just suffering. The guy declined that and then asked for x-rays and an ultrasound to see if there were any living puppies in the mom...and to see how many pups there were! Way to wait until she is in labor for a freaking ultrasound!

Anyway we had to send him somewhere else for the ultrasound and I had to listen to him tell me the reason he wouldn't euthanise the pup is because it's a 1500 dollar puppy. (American Bulldog btw). I almost spit out my mouthful of water! All I could think was 'how can this guy be concerned about the money he'll make on these pups when they may all die along with the mom!'

So they go to this other vet and get x-rays and an ultrasound and find heartbeats. They go home and decide to wait and see if they come out alive because he had her bred 3 times in three days so he thought some of the pups would be fine. (wtf?)

Anyway, he came back to pay the 42 dollar fee we charged to examine to puppy (we didn't even charge for ANY of the other stuff they actually did...fluids and what not) and all he could say was "Some of these damn puppies better make it so I can pay for this sh**" My co-worker almost smacked him at this point. Then on top of it all he calls us a bit later to see if we can do a c-section or something to save the mom and babies because he doesn't want to lose all this money on them! Our doctors refused to see him and sent him to the place where he got the ultrasound (since they knew more than we did anyway)

The doc said that that dog wasn't going to deliver it was basically miscarrying those pups. And all the jerk cared about was his money loses! It was absolutely sickening!

Sorry...just really needed to vent about that...we were all pretty outraged...and last I kind of over-heard was that they don't think any pups made it...I don't even know about the poor momma.

I might have been tempted to call animal control on that guy for abuse. What a moron.

People like this shouldn't be allowed to reproduce - or own anything that can reproduce for that matter. UGH!!

Yeah I was barely holding it together when I had to deal with him....thank god I was not there when he made the comment to my co-worker...you can guarantee I would not have been able to control my mouth upon hearing that! Although I wouldn't have been in trouble I'M SURE because the vet was in a foul mood after this guy and said a few "lovely" things about him when he left...he was NOT very happy.

I totally agree with everyone else so far! What a horrible day, I hope you can relax and try to put it out of your mind for a while (fat chance, if it were me I'd be plotting an abduction of a certain dog).

Yeah really! Hmm yeah we do have their address in the computer!! I sure hope that the dog made it though, although I'm not sure what would be better because the vet also mentioned that this kind of thing happens from over breeding dogs...go figure!

Re: Outrageous!

It msut be so hard to have to see and hear people like that! Does your office have any sort of policy or guidelines about reporting abusive owners to animal control (if that's the US equivalent of the RSPCA)?

Hope you have many many positive experiences for every horrible one like this...

There is no way he could have been reported to the ASPCA for animal cruelty?

Re: Outrageous!

That is awful, he should be reported to the ASPCA or something....those poor dogs. I hope the mother won't suffer if she is sick.
We once had a guy come into our office with a pregnant great dane. This dog was so sick it was sad. He asked the vets to do what they could but he didn't want to pay more than $200.00 because he was "broke for the rest of the month" as he put it. Well he brought her in three days later with four of the pups all of which were dead and started yelling at the vet saying it was his fault the pusp died and that they were pure bred and he lost alot of money and demanded that we compensate him for the loss of these pups. Well we refused and he got really mad so while the mother was in surgery he scribbled out a long nasty note telling the vet how much he hated him and what a moron he was and left $50 with it to have the female euthanized. He said she would be worthless to him know because she was full of infection and the vet said she would have to be spayed when they took the rest of the pups out of her. All of the pups were dead as well and it was so upsetting for the mother. When she came to she was depressed for weeks afterwards.
She wasn't euthanized though. One of our friends ended up calling the humane society and the local paper and a fund was set up for her and she ended up healing and is living with a nice family who is taking wonderful care of her from what I hear. She lives in London now.

Re: Outrageous!

So sorry you had to experience such a horrible person.

This is just one more incident that re-affirms my belief that there are evil, stupid jackasses running around out there. I would not have been able to deal with this idiot on any decent level. Too bad no one thought to call the police while he was there. He might have been charged with animal cruelty, or at least they may have scared the snot out of him.

Is it possible to check with the other vet's office to see what the outcome was?

As a parenthetical aside - for a long time I thought about becoming a vet. The reasons I did not? I would have done bodily harm to an individual such as this or anyone who had abused or neglected an animal. I would have ended up in prison.

So I did get an update today...and I wish I could say that all the pups lived all is well and good, but the mother AmBull died in the end. I was so enraged at work that I actually swore out loud...the vet agreed though. I didn't hear if any of the puppies made it or not, but the it didn't sound like they did and they lost the poor mom too. And I bet all that a&& hole could only think of all the money he'd lost!

It's disgusting!

Re: Outrageous!

That's horrible. What suffering that dog must have endured. You're right, that idiot was probably more concerned with the money he lost. He should be made to suffer to the same extent.

Hopefully, you'll never have to experience this situation again.

I absolutely agree! Although we had a pretty crappy one today too...possibly not AS bad though. We just had a guy walk in and say "I have a dog I need to put to sleep". Well we asked the usual (and in a polite way despite his VERY nonchalant attitude) 'do you usually come here as a vet?' and 'what has happened with the dog'. He kind of just stood there and my co-worker asked 'we just need to know why we're doing the euthanasia' and he said "Because that's what I want done OKAY!" We explained to him that we do not euth. for no reason at this clinic and he stormed out slamming the door behind him. We could see the dog in the car and the vet guess from a distance that it was a 5-6 year old that was clearly bouncing around and licking his owner when he got back in the car.

We like to hope that it had done something serious or was actually sick, but we felt like if that was the case he'd have explained. He was a jerk and I sure hope that the dog was not euthanised for no reason at all!

Re: Outrageous!

Good grief!

I wouldn't last long working in a vet's office.

I'd keep a baseball bat under the counter and break it over somebody's head and I imagine that would be the end of a brief career.

Actually the vet suggested we keep a few baseball bats under the desk for people like that...knowing him he'd be more glad then angry if we actually used them on people like this. He sure looked as if he'd have used one!
