Question Thinking About A New Friend - Please Help

Hey everyone,

I posted a hello in the introduction section and now I wanted to ask my main question that I had for joining these boards. First let me give you all a little background though. My name is Mike and I am 16. My parents and I are moving into a small house, a one floor apartment type thing. Anyway, there is a small backyard, about 12' by 13' in the back so I figured any dog I would get would enjoy just sitting out there with us.

Now to the main question. I had to give up my 3 cats since you are only allowed 1 animal of that size in the complex we are moving into. It was hard but I think it was for the best anyway though. I love\ed them but I know that this was better for us and them since we haven't had quite as much time to spend with them since I am a sophomore in high school, almost a junior. I didn't want to have to choose just one either. I am not hardset on a dog but I feel that I might need something in my life to close the gap since I have always had some sort of pet since I was little and almost always more than 1. I always thought about someday getting a dog since currently the only types of animals I haven't had are basically birds and dogs. From my knowledge, a dog is an animal that can go more places and do more things with you and this is better for me now than my cats were. I am active and run track so I wouldn't mind playing fetch or just jogging along with my dog sometimes and there will also be a park fairly close to my house, like I could literally walk to it.

The "apartment" is small, is has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms with a small kitchen and a fairly nice sized living room and then the backyard. I am sure I could only have a dog of a certain size there and my mom said she would probably want a smaller dog so I was thinking about something 20 lbs or smaller. I was also thinking about a dog with a short to medium coat since I don't want to have to be brushing it and burhsing knots out all of the time. My dad also have had at least 3 dogs when he was younger so he knows quite a few things but I wanted some other feedback as well since I will have to plead my case before they would consider getting another animal, especially something like a dog since that is a large commitment. I don't want a dog that also needs to be running around either, something more towards the middle, he can sit there but also likes a bit of exercise.

Also, I was thinking that I would rather have a dog that is around 1-2 years old and has settled down some and is a bit more trained since I really don't want accidents, especially in our new house. Puppies are cute but I also know that helping dogs, such as ones from pounds are very good alternatives.

So, what are my options and what are your opinions/advice for me. I think those are all of my questions now but thank you very much for reading all of this and I hope you can help me.

You sound like a very mature, wise young man. Good for you for considering adopting an older dog from a shelter. As far as what breed of dog to look for... that's hard because you might check out the local shelters and find the perfect mixed breed. Using your requirements, check all the local shelters and rescues. Check the newspapers, people are always placing ads looking for homes for their pets, check petfinder.com in your area... check craigslist. Believe me, there are plenty of dogs out there that fit your criteria that need a home. I bet there's someone out there that will be the perfect match.

Collect all your ads, information, etc. then present it your parents and you can all decide what might work best and go from there. I hope this was of some help. Good luck.

Re: Thinking About A New Friend - Please Help

Thank you Renoman, I would like to think that I am pretty wise when I want to be. I will take into consideration all that you said, about checking the local ads and site for dogs. I am trying to narrow down my search to some breeds now but I now that there are many mixed breeds out there that make really good pets too.

If anyone else has any advice for me such as good breeds that fit my criteria or any other type of advice, it would be much appreciated.

You might try volunteering at your nearest animal shelter. Not only will you learn a lot about dog breeds, but often the volunteers and employees get first dibs on incoming dogs...at a reduced fee.

A very good breed selector can be found at www.k9country.com. This can help move you in the direction of a purebred that could fit your lifestyle. In your case, espeically since you want a young adult dog, scanning petfinder.com and looking for any mix that fits your criteria would also be a good place to start.
