How did you name your dog?

I wanted a foreign sounding name for my little pug. I was exploring Asian names since the breed is from China, but actually settled on a Hawaiian name...Keoki. It suits him perfectly!

Well all of our dogs have come to us already named, haha. One day I'll actually get one I can name myself.

Yeah, that was the way with all my previous dogs. My pug was the only dog I've ever had as a puppy.

Natalie is named after Natalie of the music group the "Dixie Chicks". Sebastian came with his name but he was named after Sebastian in the movie "The Never Ending Story".

Elsa's named after the dog mentioned in Jason Mraz's song 'Curbside Prophet'. Thus, my forum name too.

mickey and minnie

Well how we named our animals is funny. first off our then 3 year old daughter named her cat Kovu after the lion king 2 character. then our saint bernard Minnie we got from a humane society and she was laready named that so we kept it. then we just got a Chiweenie(dauchsund/chiuahua) and since we have a minnie we got mickey. he is a black and white puppy!

I bought my Golden Retriever mix when he was about a 5-month old puppy from the local pound. He looked like a golden Teddy Bear. So I named him "El Oroso," which is Spanish for "The Bear."

The background is that I now live in West Virginia but am from Southern California, "The Golden State" whose Bear is the state animal. Our high school team was "The Bears" and our yearbook was/is called "El Oroso."

So I thought "El Oroso" was the perfec name for my dog.

But none of my wife's family members could pronounce "El Oroso." So they started calling him "Buddy."

Now he answers to Buddy... and rarely "El Oroso."

(Heavy Sigh)

Tipper and Lacey were named such because the breeders last name is Schuh....and he insists that all his pups have his name in their reg. names....so Tipper is Schu Tip and Lacey is SchuLace (we took off the last "H")....Tir is named Tir Ceo (pro. "teer ko") because i have decided that all my dogs will have Gaelic names from now on (means country mist)

Irish names

We named 4 of our Yorkies Irish names, Maggie (born in Ireland), Seamus, Teagan and Cooper. The new puppy we decided to name something simple so we decided on Jack, still sounds Irish but not as uncommon as the rest.
Bonnie
Maggie and Seamus when they were just wee pups in their Harley gear!

Love that picture!

Well I named Louie after a book I was reading at the time, Interview With The Vampire. One of the main characters was named Louis/Louie. Jack's name came from a movie that was very popular the year we got him. The movie was "Titanic" and the main characters name was Jack. We got Marley's name because we were listening to Bob Marley on the drive to see her for the first time at the Humane Society.

My new puppies name is Ophelia - straight from the pages of Hamlet. She is just a really dramatic and crazy type of puppy

Kelkat - sounds like Dukes of Hazard to me!

You got me Melos. And for the record, it was the TV show NOT the movie! Our outdoor cats are named after Veggietales, our indoor cats are named after historical figures, and the wild animals we rehab all get nursery rhyme names (the possums were Hickory, ****ory, and Dock).

Smile

We got the name Scout from the little girl in "To Kill a Mockingbird". I just liked it. Of course now I have to constantly correct everyone who calls her a "HE"!

Our girl Lola was already 3 years old when we adopted her...so we tried to stick with something that sounded close to the name she had then. The tag in the shelter said "Alleyia' or something. We tried to keep with the L and the A sounding. She responded pretty well to Lola, so it just kept. It fits her.

Our cat is black, and we named him Cinder...like burnt coals, or ashes.

And we currently are naming our newest kitten. We are leaning very heavily towards calling her 'Luna'. She is a sweet little Siamese mix, that has the grey/silver coloring like the moon. Plus it would also work as a shortened form of 'lunatic' seeing as how she is a crazy little kit.

Mocha's name was Hereford, but she didn't know if of course so we changed it to Mocha just because she was a dark brown (she has since lightened) with white on her face, like cream. I wanted to name her Kahlua, but nobody else did.

With Panna, her name was Sunshine and since she was 2-years-old, we figured she knew it and were thinking of just keeping it, but she didn't respond to it at all (initially we thought she was maybe deaf). We wanted a name that was kind of related to Mocha and was also two syllables, but we couldn't find any in English. We thought about the "cream" on a Mocha (like on Mocha's face), and since we're Italian we named her "cream" in Italian - Panna!

Cannelle's original name from her abusive home was Ewok, which the rescue changed to Peek-a-boo. We didn't want a name that pointed out her eye - she's a normal dog so she should have a normal name. We thought of having a name in Italian again, French, or Spanish and we wanted it to fit in with the "theme". I really liked "cinnamon", but it's three syllables in Italian (Cannella) and Spanish (Canela), but it's "Cannelle" in French, so she was named Cannelle!

Shaggy - that is funny about your black cat's name - Cinder. We have a black cat named Ember, because her eyes glow like embers
