Re: How did you name your dog?

Well that was fun, reading all the names and how they came about

Watson was already named (after a scientist, not Sherlock's sidekick) but we call him Woogie, because his face was so cute and mushy that I'd grab it and squish it and say "woogie woogie woogie".

So now he's The Woog.

And one cat is Idgee (Japanese for orphan)
And the other cat is Ezra (after the band Better Than Ezra)

The Woog, The Idge and The Ez.

That's really silly, eh?

Snoopy, from Charlie Brown, is black and white and my dog is black and white so he got the name Snoopy.

Re: How did you name your dog?

How did I miss this thread? I like reading it!

The dog my parents had and who died when I was really little was named Hans Solo. (Solo for short) He was an incredibly handsome collie, but wild and didn't always have that "eager to please" personality!
Well, Solo was such so perfect looking that he was a stud for a collie breeder in the area. (I think actually my dad adopted Solo from this woman, and he was a Stud afterwards, maybe because he wasn't shown..?) Anyway, back on topic,

So we ended up adopting Solo's son from this woman. And his greatX5 granddad was a famous Tartanside who won all these champion show awards. Well, because our dog had Tartansides in his pedigree, my father was think "wow, this'll be a good looking dog (show quality)" Well, that didn't really work out. This guy was goofy, and didn't have all of the "correct" proportions. So my dad named him "Tartan'sFLIPside," and we called him Flip.

Right now I don't have a dog (my next one will probably be Bruce Wayne, as I'm a comic book nerd, but ONLY if it matches the dog). I do have three cats. My kitty who still lives with my parents is named Porkchop, after a former center-lineman for Mississippi State University. Porkchop is a HUGE orange tabby cat with 7 toes on one front foot and 8 on the other front foot. He's big and gentle.

Our cat is named Misfit. My husband named her that when he got her because he loves The Misfits. It was actually ridiculous, because then my husband ended up living with his friend who was Ramones-obsessed, and ended up naming HIS cat Ramona. So, Ramona and Misfit were friends. Luckily, I love cats and The Misfits, so we got married. She's a 9 year old all black cat who likes to play chase and she's out little goth kitty.

We recently adopted another stray, and we weren't sure what to name him. He was a 4 month old tuxedo kitten who, despite living on the streets, was gentle, sweet, vulnerable, and naive. He came right up to us! And he has virtually NO fear gene. Whatsoever. So, we named him Edward Scissorhands, because he's so much like him. But we've been considering calling him "Harvey Dent" or "Two-Face" because he has half black skin on one side of his mouth and half pink-skin on the other side, (that and he is so sweet, innocent, and cuddly, but is a little jerk who always gets into things he's not supposed to!!)

Re: How did you name your dog?

Chicalen got his name from my husband he said he was a funny little thing in Spanish which is Chicalen.
When I got Sofi from the shelter she was Trixi but Chicalen who I call Chici kept getting confused so Inga helped me find Sofi which means wisdom.

Re: How did you name your dog?

When we adopted Jester from the Shelter and he was originally named Manger which did not work for me at all. When we got him home he was just a goofy Lab and so he got the name Jester.

Now we have Lady and her name had been Sallie but my niece is named Allie so it just wasn't going to work. Anyways Lady is very 'Lady Like' especially compared to my former dog ^^ so she got the name Lady.

We have a cat named Princess Kitty (named by my daughter) but extremely fitting of her personality.

Then there is Bitty Kitty. He was dumped in a box as a very tiny kitten (maybe 4-5 weeks old). I found him shivering and crying in a box HE is no longer bitty at about 13 pounds.

There are some strays that I had fixed and I get them vaccinated every year plus I feed them (I guess they are more like outside cats rather than strays), we call them sweetie and meanie....I'm sure you can guess why.

Re: How did you name your dog?

nlkeple, that is so funny I use to have a black cat when I was growing up and that was his name he showed up on our door step in a rain storm and he was a itty bitty thing with big gold eyes and instantly became mine he would follow me around the house and sleep on my chest or my feet. I had him for ruffly 10 years then he passed away. He was an awsome cat.

Re: How did you name your dog?

My cat of 14 years was almost Minnie because when she came to us as a tiny kitten she had a perfect little Mickey-head on her nose. In the end, I chose to name her Spot, partially because she was spotted black and white, but primarily because at nine years old I was a huge Star Trek: The Next Generation fan and my favorite character (Data) had a cat named Spot.

Cammy's full name was Cameo (like the piece of jewelry) because she was all brown but for a little white circle at the base of her throat.

Alvin came to us with that name and we decided to keep it, even though we think it's dorky. It kind of fits him...he's a bit of a nerd.

Re: How did you name your dog?

Well I had a black lab puppy a while back and just could not think of a name for him so I was watching a dog show on t.v. and a female black lab named Kila won so i just changed the "A" to an "O" to Kilo!

I now own a female peek-a-poo and i named her Belle because I love Beauty and the Beast Disney cartoon. (Belle also means beautiful) And in high school I was in drill team and we were called Belles...

I also have a solid black german shepherd and my boyfriend named him Turbo because he loves to race cars its his hobby!

Re: How did you name your dog?

We named a Doberman that I worked with for about a year Vince. Short for "invincible".

He got that name after I was working on our friends property. He was supposed to stay in the main yard but got away and started chasing down the truck. We had just driven over the cattle guards and when I saw him running full speed I immediately though, "OH NO!!! He's going to run right into it and break all four legs!!!" I was right about him running right through it. Amazingly enough, he went down rolled about 10 feet then hopped up and looked like he was trying to figure out what happened!

He came through without even a scratch. No bumps, bruises or nothing! So from then on he became Vince.

Re: How did you name your dog?

Cool thread. A lot of movie/TV inspired names here.

I got Jak because my dog's original name was Cory, which just didn't fit to me. I just liked the sound of "Jack" and thought it would be cute without the "c" so that was that. He took to it in no time, so I'd like to think he's happy with it.

Re: How did you name your dog?

Let's see, I have 8 dogs currently, nine at the end of the day because my hubby is getting back from Peru with our 5th and final peruvian hairless dog.

Ayla- lab cross- named after the main character in Jean. M. Auel's book "Clan of the Cave Bear"
Nantan Lupan- Catahoula- Named after a main character in the movie "geronimo"

Jebus- Neapolitan mastiff- oh, crap, we named him from "the Simpons" when Homer goes to south america to escape PBS. The full quote is "save me Jebus" His full name is Vanguard's Jebus Cripes of Nabernay.
Gaggia- Neapolitan mastiff- she was pre-named by the same breeder and it is a brand of Espresso maker in Italy. She was a psycho puppy when we got her and the name fit then, but not so much now that she is lazy.

El Guapo- Peruvian hairless- from the movie "the three amigos"
Pisco- Peruvian hairless- Named for the town and alcohol the town produces. The town is now essentially gone after the 8.0 earthquake that happened in august.
Canela- peruvian hairless- it means "cinnamon" in spanish, and she is the color of cinnamon. My friend named her.
Movera- Peruvian hairless- I had a dream about the dogs and Canela said in the dream that Movera wanted to be named something "exciting". I looked up the word excite in spanish and it was "mover". I added an A to the end to make it feminine.

Re: How did you name your dog?

My niece teaches kindergarten and the naughtiest boy in the class, but the one she liked best, was named Riley, and that just stuck with me. I wanted an Irish name for my guy to go with part of my heritage, so Riley Saoirse Ó Coileáin he became.

Riley (Gaelic for valiant warrior),
Saoirse (Gaelic for Freedom) because it's something I hold dear and deeply appreciate), and
Ó Coileáin (Gaelic for Collins) for Michael Collins, the Irish freedom fighter and one of my heroes.

Re: How did you name your dog?

I'm surprised of the number of dogs named after TVs or bands. I guess I'm just weird.

Where should I start?

Samara We picked this name because we liked how it sounded. It also meant guardian/protector. It had Hebrew (so I have read and been told by someone else) origins which was kind of neat too. It fits her very well and I think its a beautiful name.

Vipette. I don't really know how I came up with this name. I just kind of made it up. Her name is Ms. Viper Venom (after her grand father Viper Venom) and I just called her Vipette. Husband likes it and said it sounds like a car so I guess it works.

Category 5 I liked because it was different. My husband calls him 5 and I'm never sure what to really call him. I have been calling him 5 or Catty but I don't know if Catty is too girly for him. I called him Cat5 a couple of times but my husband working in PCs I don't think likes the relation.
His brothers are named Twister Jr (called TJ), Tremor and Mudslide. His sisters are named Dark Skies (called Bella), Storm Chaser and Lady Twister (called Rubia (spanish for blonde) because of her buckskin color).

Peek A Bou I call A-Bou. I make sure I say A so that it doesn't sound like that little monkey on Alladin. I thought Peeka could remind people of a pokemon and I'm not a pokemon fan. All those pups had names with Bou because the line (of the mother) is Boudreaux. There is one called Bou Who. Another that is Bou Bou that might remind some of Yoogie the bears friend.

Nediva I picked because it meant noble and I thought the name fits her and the breed very well. I think it meant noble and honest.

Thunderstruck was named after the AC/DC song. But my MIL calls him Thunder Butt..lol

Kodiak got his name because he is solid white.

La Tigra(spanish for tiger) looks brindle and the coloring is kind of like a tiger I suppose is simple enough.

Ari (Japanese for ant) got his name because he was kind of the runt and looked like a little ant as a pup. Seriously he did.

Some others had their names when they came to us and we didn't change him.

Now he answers to Buddy... and rarely "El Oroso."

Do you mean El Oso? Because El Oroso means The Golden Bear. Similar I know, but tech more then just The Bear.

I was reading The Scarlet Pimpernell when I got Percy. Percival/Percy is the Scarlet Pimpernell's real name. So I went with that.

Nice...I started reading them when I was a 7th grader lol. Hopefully she manages to write the last book sometime before she, you know, dies... (hey it's been ~5yrs and the woman's 71 )

Anyway I love those books lol

Anyone who's read Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series knows your pain. He did die, probably mere months before the final book was finished.

Re: How did you name your dog?

I named Tiffera (Tiff-ear-uh) after a MapleStory character I made. The name is actually a mix between Kiira and Tiffany... somehow. But I really love that name and it fits her well.
Tiffera also has 2 middle names. Yes, 2. Her first middle name is Britain, named after my best friend. Her second middle name is Maximum, which is the name of my favorite character in the Maximum Ride series (book series.)

So her full name is kinda like Tiffera Britain Maximum (and then my last name.)

Re: How did you name your dog?

Oh, I hope Jean doesn't die before the book is published, that would be aweful! Her writting is amazing, and I have read all the books at least three times each.

I like another series of books written by a couple Michael and Kathleen Gear.
It is the "People of the...series" there are 10 or more books I beleive.

It is nice to see that other people read Jean's stuff. I didn't realize how old she was. Hopefully it will get published sooner than later. I hope none of the main characters die, but I am not sure how she is going to end the series. It will be intersting to say the least.
