Unhappy No one will allow pets!

Iam 18, i have a 3month old puppy, i have a full-time job and im looking to move out. Everywhere i look NO PETS. Someone must have a heart, how can you live without pets? I have grown up with cats, dogs, fish, birds. I will not be selling my dog because no one will allow her to move in with me, i love her so much. Everytime i think "ohh i could sell her" i get really sad and start crying! I want to move out so bad but my puppy is stopping me.

I LOVE HER SO MUCH LOOK HOW CUTE SHE IS!

Re: No one will allow pets!

Just keep looking. Something should pop up eventually (might take a long time though). Do you live with your parents at the moment? If you do, its free (or not as much as a real apartment would be).

Re: No one will allow pets!

1. Check your local Craigslist - you can sort by apartments that allow dogs.

2. Check rent.com and other big listing sites. With a small dog, you shouldn't have a problem, although you almost certainly WILL have t pay a pet deposit- it's just the way stuff goes.

3. If you're just not finding ANYTHING or your applications are getting denied? It may not be the pet thing at all. You may not have good enough credit. (Lack of credit - normal at your age- can be interpreted as 'bad credit' by some housing agencies, unfortunately.) Maybe your parents would co-sign a lease with you?

Re: No one will allow pets!

I'm sure the mods will be on to it very soon.

In answer to your original question about finding somewhere to live, I don't know what the rental market is like in Australia, but in England you would probably have to have a guarantor to get a flat at 18.

There are places that take dogs, but by far more that don't. When I was younger I found somewhere to rent with two dogs and four cats, but I had to have character references etc before I got the lease.

Keep looking and good luck.

Re: No one will allow pets!

If you keep looking and check out everything available you will find a place that will take your pup. Ask everyone you know if they know of a place that will take pets. Word of mouth is sometimes the best way. Check out every listing you find. Don't know about there, but here, apartment complexes are relaxing their rules some and accepting dogs under 50 or 60 pounds.

You have a small dog and people are more likely to accept a small dog than a large one. Just keep in mind, you may have to compromise - the place might not be your dream place, but you'll have your pup with you.

I had 3 GSDs when I was looking for a place. It took quite a while, but I found a place that would accept the dogs. The landlord wanted to meet the dogs and I had him talk to my trainer as well. So I know it's hard but it can be done.

I don't know what's available in Australia, but you might try contacting a rescue group or humane society. They often keep lists of animal friendly housing because they get so many people who are faced with having to give up their dogs because of rental problems.

Good luck.

The above suggestions are great as far in finding an apartment locator that is pet friendly. I also have a different suggestion that worked for me. When I got my own townhouse rental, the owner said " no pets over 25 pounds". Needless to say- Hottie is way over a 100 pounds. I asked the owner of the place to meet hottie at my place I was at. He came in, saw a very clean home, and met my quiet, gentle ( but big dog)-- I got the townhome.. He would pop in once in a while, but my house and yard was always clean.
Sometimes if you show you are a responsible owner in both the dog, and your place- this worked for me...

Re: No one will allow pets!

Borzoimom, I did a similar thing when I moved back to Wisconsin with my 85 pound Irish setter. I could not find a rental that would allow her and finally found a small house on the same property as the owner's house.

I called and asked if I could bring the dog out to meet him. The setter was a perfect lady, except that she did not like other dogs.

We arrived at the house. I open the door of the truck. My setter jumped out and immediately pounced on the owner's beagle, Billie.

She didn't hurt him, though. I got the house, lived there for a year before buying a house and Brandy and Billie became friends. Sort of.

Re: No one will allow pets!

Sometimes I think they say NO PETS so people dont just feely have a house full of animals. But most of the one's around here will let you have a pet if you pay an extra deposit. My landlord said no pets but when we asked after we lived here for a few months he agreed as long as we paid an extra deposit. I think most Landlords dont want pets due to the mess, smell and clean up. I used to clean Rental houses for a Reality company and there were A LOT of houses that had pets and the owners werent to clean with them. So Im sure that's the reason for weeding out the carless tenants... Good Luck with your search... Cute puppy

Re: No one will allow pets!

Oh Kansas- I agree! One place I rented that had "no dogs" but the land lord accepted me- ( this was when I was in college). Well I walked into this apartment to see it, and it had new carpeting etc. But I kept picking up a odor I could not quite place- .. finally about 2-3 weeks later I figured it out.. TOM CAT and new carpet. The previous people must have had a tom cat, and when they replaced the carpet- they didnt treat the floor.. I called the landlord and asked them to come over. As they walked into the the apartment I said I just wanted you to know now- the place smells like cat- a pet odor and it wasnt my dog. She walked arorund for a few minutes- laughed and said yes you are right- Okay I will get you a paper on the odor for your records...

Re: No one will allow pets!

My landlord advertises his places as no pets as well. But when I I went for the walk through I asked him to please re consider because I really liked the apartment and I only had Chloe at the time and she was very small and clean and I kept going on about everything wonderful about her and he laughed and said "hey hey hey miss, you can bring your dog, I just advertise no dogs allowed becase some people take advantage of places that allow dogs and trash the place." We moved in two weeks later and he came to see Chloe when we moved in. He stop sin every now and then just to say hi and see if everything is kosher and it always is and always has been! I even caught him giving Chloe and Sadie a treat a few times....he even talks to them with baby talk, haha!!!! He has ammended his leases to read no more than two dogs and the dogs are not allowed to be over 35 pounds.

That's a stipulation that has always amused and confused me. Many motels have a similar restriction.

Are they afraid a larger dog is going to cause the floors to collapse? SOME (not all) large dogs are quieter and less inclined to chew on stuff they shouldn't. There are even some large dogs (e.g. standard poodles and airedales) that shed little or not at all.

If I were a landlord, I would not want to rent to someone who had a young Esther. But my daughter is moving into her first apartment in about a week and I wonder if the manager has any idea how much noise that little guy can make and how much damage he can do if he's bored.

I'm going to miss them both, BTW, but they're not going to be that far away.

Re: No one will allow pets!

Seriously! My big guys are not barkers, calm and docile with not even a ounce of energy of any smaller dog.. More dog doesnt mean more energy in our case.. And even shed a heck of lot less than any shepherd or dobe I ever owned as well... and to be honest- I keep the yard clean- for my dogs.. the house is kept clean- for my dogs.. lol. They like a clean carpet and couchs.. lol.. ( and I am not kidding.. lol.. )

Re: No one will allow pets!

As a landlord myself, I can speak from that point of view. First off, I absolutely love animals. Why else am I on this forum almost every day. As a general rule, we do allow our tenants to have dogs, but we are picky about it. No puppies, must be housebroken, no cats, no pits and no rotties. Now let me explain our reasoning for that. First off, the no pit / rottie rule is a requirement of our insurance company, so that one is out of our hands. But for the other rules, it is no easy task to remove urine odor, especially cat urine from carpet. We've done it, don't want to do it again, hence the puppy, housebroken and cat rules. Now, there have been times we have allowed some rule bending, but it is only after a tenant has been in one of our houses for awhile and they have a proven track record of being good tenants, clean and responsible. Honestly, I don't like to ban puppies or cats, but even an extra deposit does not cover the cost if the carpet has to be replaced.

Re: No one will allow pets!

Just a couple of other suggestions... don't know about Australia, but here there are a great many real estate agents that handle rentals. If you contact them, give them your criteria they will do the leg work for you. You just go and look at the apartments they tell you about.

Second, and I am not at all suggesting you be deceitful, but if you find a place that sounds good, make arrangements to look at it without mentioning your pet first. Let the landlord meet you, talk to you, etc. While you're doing a walk thru and talking to him/her ask about the pet issue. Sometimes if they have met you face to face, they have an easier time saying yes than if it's just over the phone.

Re: No one will allow pets!

RonE I also find that rule amusing. My two dogs are pretty well behaved but most of the dogs in this comples are noisy, aggressive, messy and destructive. And some of them even attack the landlord when he comes to check the places out every week! Though he is a big guy he said he would rather have to wrestle a 35 pound dog off of him than a 70 or 100 pound dog any day and I can agree with those sentiments!
