I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for all to go smoothly. As well as checking up on the litter once born!

Progestrone needs to be above a 6 to be in " peak heat". Coupled with LH levels is how the AI is figured for top heat. A sperm only lives 3 days max- so you want the highest level of progrestrone. At 8.2 she is REALLY cranking.. lol.. |

A dogs uterus is a progesterone environment.... normally a bitch has a low progesterone amount in her system but when she comes into season that progesterone level starts to go up..... she needs to have a certain level of progesterone in order to ovulate and then to maintain a pregnancy. When we are doing a surgical implant like what Redyre is doing or like what I did with Shalva we are often using semen that is being shipped FedEx. So the semen is collected on one day and then shipped through the mail to the reproductive vet and then the bitch is inseminated. There are many ways to inseminate... in this case and what I did was surgical where you make a small incision in the uterus and actually pour the semen over the eggs.... close everything up and hopefully have puppies 63 days later. However the eggs are only good for so many days and the semen is only good for so many days so by taking the blood tests and measuring the level of progesterone you make sure that you are putting the semen on the eggs at the right time so you get a litter of pups. Generally the LH surge happens when the progesterone hits a 1.5-2.5 and this surge preceeds ovulation then ovulation happens at a 5 with eggs ripening approximately 48 hours later.... so the progesterone level tells us exactly when to breed and increase our odds of getting puppies..... Then once a dog is bred and the litter takes the progesterone should stay at a minimum of a 15 (nanograms/liter as I recall, please correct me if I am messed up with that) in order for the bitch to maintain the pregnancy.
hope that makes sense
just to add one thing....
this progesterone environment when a bitch comes into season is VERY VERY hard on the uterus and is very damaging to the uterus.... and is the reason that a bitch should be spayed as the repeated bombardment of progesterone on the uterus can cause serious medical problems such as pyometra and often fatal uterine infection. Thus any bitch that is not goign to be bred should be spayed to avoid the damaging effects of the progesterone on their systems. |

I don't knowe why, but when I was in college in our veterinary technician program they didn't spend much time or tell us much about reproduction and conceptions or AI. I suppose it is because they do not want to condone breeding as we worked very closely with our local rescue. I don't know. But again, thanks so much! |
