| Indestructible Dog Toys.... ...Do they exist?
I'm having trouble finding a dog toy that my mastiff can't destroy within minutes. Some that we've tried: Tuffies in various shapes--what a joke these are. Less than 5 minutes to rip out the squeaker. He swallowed the cover off of one and was scheduled for surgery before he vomited it up. Never again. Fire Hose Squeak N Fetch--another not-so strong and durable soft toy. I had to removed this within minutes of giving it to him as he was ripping it up. Tire Biters--Big fat flat tire. He ripped it and was tearing off pieces with 1/2 hour. Orbee balls with 5/5 chew rating--Not so tough. Brew starts chewing the opening and soon the toy has a big tear in it. If not removed, he will soon ingest a big chunk of it. Nylabone-various-Chew off the end caps and then swallows the shaft whole. Greenies--Let's not go there. What a joke. King Kongs (the black ones)--these are the best that I've found. They last several days to a week. It gets expensive buying two a week.
Anybody else have a really tough chewer. What have you found? Share your experiences, please! |

| Re: Indestructible Dog Toys.... i was stupid enough to give my dog a tennis ball, 10 min later he only had a little piece left, the rest he chewed and swalowed, took a few days to come out pice by piece.
greenes are joke, my dog is 50lb, i buy him greenes that are the biggest, this way he at least chews them befoe swalloing. greenes for his size get swalowed whithin a minute. plus maker sure you don,t breathe while picking up after him eating greenes, it is green and stinks awefull, but there is a bright side, largest greene keeps him busy for 40 min. |

| Re: Indestructible Dog Toys.... Kong ball or Nylabone Galileo?
Maybe you could try to get him interested in playing with a toy instead of chewing it: like a treat toy or something where it is more fun to push and roll the toy around than chew on it. Or maybe get him interested in fetching a frisbee or ball instead of chewing it? Obviously he will still want to chew, but maybe you can get some toys he can play with that don't get destroyed |

| Re: Indestructible Dog Toys.... OMG! Tennis balls are my biggest nightmare. Brew pops them and swallows them whole. When we take him somewhere, he invaribly finds one and eats it. His radar is totally tuned to locating stray tennis balls.
Toys, especially balls are so high in value to him that he swallows them rather than give them up. If I can get my hand wrapped around the ball while it's still in his mouth, I can usually prevent it from going down. Balls that I give him intentionally have to be of a solid construction (not able to be compressed) and bigger than 4" diameter or down they will go. |

| Re: Indestructible Dog Toys.... Esther is an aggressive chewer. I bought a $22 black Kong with a guarantee and took it back the next morning in 100 pieces. It lasted less than 3 minutes.
With the refund, I bought a Kong look-alike from Nylabone called the Rhinocone (or something similar.) She's had it for over a year. I stuff it with cookies and she throws it and drops it down the stairs until the cookies crumble. It's very entertaining for both of us.
I've also given her several of the Nylabones for Great White Sharks, or whatever they call the most durable model, and they last a month or more.
Oddly, she will not chew up real tennis balls because they are too valuable for fetch. If she gets one of the fake ones that they sell in pet stores, she'll trash it in seconds. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I do have a solid rubber ball that we play fetch with. He likes to chew on it but so far it has held up well. I'm not sure if it's a Kong product or not.
We tried The Galileo too. He was able to chew it so that it became really rough surfaced and then it would make his mouth bleed and also our bare legs would get pretty scraped up when he rubbed against us with it.
RonE,
I haven't actually tried any of the Nylabone rubber toys. I'll pick one up next time I'm at the pet store.
I've been thinking about trying the Nylabone Crazy Ball. Does anyone have any experience with it? I also haven't tried the Big Chew line. Anybody? |

| Re: Indestructible Dog Toys.... Just checking to see if there are any additional ideas!? I have a 100+ pound GS/Rotti that can destroy anything that ends up in his mouth. The 90 minute chew treats last 5 minutes. LOL The twisted knotted rope toys work good for a throwing but don't serve as entertainment without a person around. Every other attempt to provide chewing entertainment leads to destruction within minutes-hours. He loves the expensive canvas retreiver trainners but they last about week before they are destroyed. Sometimes I am tempted to find a small trailer tire and see what he does with that....
Thank goodness puppy days are over and he is no longer dragging the furniture around the house!! |

| Re: Indestructible Dog Toys.... I don't have bigger dogs like yous but I've seen a neighbours use old car tyre scrubbed clean and male dog tuck a couple days at it. If pup make sure it won't swollow any though. Even put one on a rope to a tree for pulling about with in the garden. |

| Re: Indestructible Dog Toys.... I have the same problem with my Mastiff. When we first got him, he had a toy box full of toys and now he's down to 2. He has his Kong, that he never plays with unless there is something in it and he has a 89 cent squeaky toy from Walmart. The squeaky toy is next to be thrown away because I noticed a tear in it. I used to get him knuckle bones, but he breaks them up within an hour into small pieces. I'm afraid he'll choke on it. As for tennis balls, he tears the fuzz off of them until they are bald, which really upsets my Lab...
I used to let him chew on plastic bottles. Not anymore because he just started eating them and ripping them apart. A plastic bottle can keep my Lab busy for a long time. |

| Re: Indestructible Dog Toys.... I won a soft toy at a raffle recently and we have had it for over a month and it is not torn apart--which is amazing, since my crew contains a boxer, bullmastiff and two Belgian Tervuren. The tervs are expecially tough on toys and usually pull soft toys apart in about 5 minutes. The toy is made by Bamboo and it is from their Combat line of toys--which are made to be really tough. I was so impressed by their toughness, I drove 35 miles to PetSmart last night to get another one just as a spare. Here is a link....

| Re: Indestructible Dog Toys.... How well are those toys sewn together? From the pictures I looked at it seemed my Mastiff would be able to tear the trim off, but I can't really see the stitches, so don't know for sure.
Also, I would have to order it online because I couldn't find a store close to me that carries them from the store locater link on the site. |

| Re: Indestructible Dog Toys.... How about real bones? A quick stop at your local butcher's (or sometimes even the deli at a chain grocery store) can put those to the test for you. |

I was able to find some at Petsmart, but not a great selection. Thay had the small people shaped ones for little dogs (not the big ones, which of course are the ones I wanted) and a big tug toy for the big dogs. |
