Question why would a female dog???

my female dog (6mnths) just mounted and humped my other female dog and was even humping the air...Im so confused why would a female do that??? she did it twice
a little more info...the one being mounted is a 1 year old american bulldog (sadie) we adopted her in jan. shes got a lot of problems she was abused she doesnt stand up for herself at all the one doing the mounting is cody shes a 6 month old mountain cur (also adopted) shes definately to dominate one of the two no questions asked.... sadie ran away yesterday and it took us 13 hours to get her home the mounting occured shortly after she got home...

Re: why would a female dog???

I have a female that is three and is still mounting my five year old male, both have been fixed for years. I feel that my dog is being dominante over the male so when I catch her I do tell her off. She likes to do the when company is over so it makes it even better. I wouldn't worrie about it lots of females do that and with her being so young it might just stop. How does the other dog act when she is doing this?

Its dominance- meaning I am the boss and do not push me around. I have seen this several times. Galina even does it to her brother- and its rather funny really because she is shorter than he is.. lol. It usually happens if play gets too wild.
However- you do not correct the mounter- actually you correct the one being mounted. I know that sounds backwards- but if you tell the one being mounted, they didnt see when the other dog told them to stop. Also it tells the mounter that you are handling this- not them..
The other option is the the one being mounted has full anal gland sacs. See unbred dogs confuse that musk. That musk can mean excitement or male to female- maybe she is in heat. Have both dogs anal sacs looked at by your vet.

Re: why would a female dog???

IMO, the mouned dog is not always the dog that needs to be corrected, it's way more complex then that. The OP said this only happened twice. It's way to early to tell if the mounted dog just simply doesnt care at the momment or if she will start to object over time. This I say is something they need to resolve on their own, over time, without the owner's aversion. The only time I would consider stepping in is if the mounting become compulsive or if fighting with major fouls occur. Otherwise, let them be. She may very well grow out of ot too. I remember Elsa humping my brother's dog Victory once, and she never did it again after that. It's probably more embarassing to us humans than really a concern.
