Puppys ears mutilated by owner

I read a story in my local newspaper the other day about some people who called the humane society because someone was keeping a dog on their balcony and it hadn't been let inside for a few days. They puppy had been on the balcony whining and scratching.
The humane society called the police and gained access to the apartment becase no one would answer the door and when they got to the poor puppy (a 9 month old rottweiller/GSD cross) they discovered its ears had been cut off. And I mean completely not just the tips like a home made cropjob but completely cut off.
The girlfriend ended up comming home as they were removing the dog and (of course) claimed innocence and said she didn't even know boyfriend had a dog and the boyfriend claims he just bought the dog the day before and its ears were like that when he got it.
This poor dog is healing up at the humane society and waiting hopefully for a better home to come available (which i truly hope one does). But I thought it was absolutly outrageous that the guy who did this to his dog (they think he cut the ears off with a hack saw or a large serrated kitchen knife) is allowed to re-claim the dog if he can pay the vet bills with-in five days of the seizure of said dog.

<sigh> Poor dog - he looks such a trusting sweetie. I hope he finds a better home and the SOAB doesn't try to get him back.

Re: Puppys ears mutilated by owner

It makes me crazy. I mean if that was his kid and he cut his kids ears off he would be thrown in jail for the rest of his life. But because it is only a dog he can cut its ears off, pay the vet bills then get it back? WTF is up with that? We need to take a serious look at our abuse laws regarding animals.

Re: Puppys ears mutilated by owner

I wrote a nice long letter to my newspapers editors leters and a few of our MPP's as well. I find this absolutly un-acceptbale. This is the year 2007, we no longer beat our children so what makes it still acceptable to abuse animals and not be punnished?
A lady a few years back boiled her cat alive in a pit on her stove and she ended up with a fine and 1 year of probation. Thats not fair.

Maybe they'll lie and say the bill is for 2.5 million dollars, lol - that would be great and on top of that, there should be a mandatory payment, reguardless of whether he's taking his dog back for $5,000 (really is should be more like - everything he owns...but $5,000 is more "acceptable.")

Re: Puppys ears mutilated by owner

well aparently the bills are only $680 dollars but the OSPCA officer that found the dog said she is going to make sure he doesn't get it back. They made him voluntarily sign him over so he won't be getting it back. I still can't believe that it is legal to get your pet back after treating it so horribly. What is wrong with our laws man???

Re: Puppys ears mutilated by owner

Obviously a lot. They're starting to take crimes against animals more seriously then in the past but there's still a lot to be worked on. I won't be happy with the laws against animal cruility untill anyone commiting such crimes is treated like they would be if the crimes were towards another person.

Someone who would treat an animal like that deserves to have more than his ears cut off.

Re: Puppys ears mutilated by owner

Ha kaykay, you just gave me a great idea. Know all I need is to find out where he lives, a sharp object, and a way to get him to pull down his pants.
THAT would be something I'm sure he'd miss more then his ears... HAHAHA...(evil laugh)

That's the way I feel exactly! The laws concerning animal abuse are just laughable and outrageous.

yeah, like the parents that left their (i think) 3 kids home alone in their apt. when they went to NM for vacation at Christmas time a few yrs back.....after a time of "parent training" they got the kids back.....or the parents that relinquish their kids for adoption and then, after the child has been adopted they decide they made a mistake and want the kid back so "daddy" claims he knew nothing about the child and they get him/her back.....

once there has been an abuse/abandonment/neglect case brought out, the people should not get them (animal or child) back and once a child is adopted they should lose all rights to that child......JMO
