| [QUOTE=flip195;5963]On a personal note I adore BC's but they can be hard work.
They are HIGHLY intelligent, have lots of drives, THEY NEED A JOB and if they don't have one they will invent one ... even if it is eating your couch. If they become bored they will, can and do become totally neurotic. These dogs are not for the faint of heart.
If you don’t have at least 2 full hours per day minimum to devote to exercise and training these dogs are NOT for you.
They can be a little nippy, and many do not like strangers, so major socialization in the early years is imperative.
Training a BC is a life long commitment, and if you find yourself with one of the more highly-strung types you could be in for a rough ride.
They excel in Agility, Flyball, and herding activities, but again, to keep them at their peak constant training is required.
I can tell you from a first hand experience this is true. We have a Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix. She is a handful and a half. I really think it is impossible for her to sit down. She has to be doing something at all times. We have cows. So she is able to keep her self busy pretty easily. We have barn cats and one house cat. They get along pretty well. There haven't been any major battles. The cat had an issue with her when we first brought her home. He still does sometimes, but for the most part he ignores her.
These dogs really are high maintenance. People always told me they were. I never really believed them, but now I do. If they don't have a job they really will find one. They are fun dogs though. I have really enjoyed having Daisy. She is absolutely wonderful and there is never a dull moment with her around. |
