Paying Respects

Last night my BF called me to let me know that he had to put his American Bulldog bitch down due to some severe health issues (cancer). She has lived a very fulfilled 10 years of life and will be greatly missed by all who knew her! She was an amazing dog with an amazing temperment. She kept me safe throughout my stay in Chicago. She would keep all the "bad guys" away, well, actually she kept everyone away from me until they got my "approval". For as much of a show she would put on all it'd take was a quiet "Marina, that's enough!" from me and she would calmly return to my side and sit quietly staring at the person. She probably wanted to go further but she respected me enough not to when I asked her to quit. She was such a well trained dog and so stable!

Marina and two of her pups, Tank on the left and Coco on the right

The only time Marina would break a heal with me is if she was assessing a threat, then she would place herself between me and it and would only go back to a heel when she was sure the threat was gone or I told her to.

It hurt me to hear of Marina's passing as I have been privlidged enough not only to know her, but to have lived a short time with her. She went from not wanting anything to do with me, to being my protector. When I would take her and Tank and my Siberian Husky, Oceano for a walk she would always place herself between me and anything she percieved to be a threat. And if that threat was strong enough, she would be active in making it clear that she would do whatever it takes to keep that threat away...even if the "threat" was simply an ambulance truck passing us too closely. I love this bitch like I love my own dogs and will miss her greatly! Marina, it may have taken a few days for me to gain your trust (like it did for anyone who was lucky enough to be graced by your presence) but once I had it, I knew I had it for good! Rest in peace dear sweet girl, until we meet again!

Me, Tank and Marina on one of our many walks together.

I'm so sorry to hear about her, seems like you two were pretty close.

From the sounds of it though, she has pups that you can be close with now.

Do her pups have her temperment?

They're definitely not your "typical" bulldogs, in a good way LOL

What a beauty. It looks like she had a full, exciting life and has left her mark behind in her two pups.

Re: Paying Respects

Alpha, for sure! I'm forgetting exactly how many pups she had but me and my BF are planning on sometime taking a drive to visit all the pups to see how they have matured. He knows exactly where each one was placed and has seen a few of them on a regular basis but a couple he hasnt seen in real life since the day they were placed.

When I move in with my BF we will be having Tank live with us (if things go according to plan) but his temperment is more of his sire than Marina's. I've met the sire a few times and their temperments are so similar that if I were to close my eyes when around Chopper, I'd pretty much be dealing with the same dog. Even their triggers are the same! LOL Both share that happy-go-lucky "lets see which person will pet me the longest!" type of attitude whereas Marina was very aloof with strangers. Ah well Tank's still a very good boy and when push comes to shove he will protect as well.

A moving tribute. It sounds like Marina had a full and very loved existence. She's a beautiful dog, clearly on the inside as well as on the outside.

Re: Paying Respects

I know this will sound odd, seeing as you know about Roxy's problems with strangers (although they've improved 150%) but it's nice to know when you've got a dog that's always looking out for you!

Walking alone at night with Hades, I have my pepper spray! LOL.

With Roxy, I just feel safe. It's a nice feeling to know that if someone popped out of the bushes her first thought would be "Protect Mommy!", Hades is, "Help me Mommy!" LOL.

All dogs are special, but there are those few with that extra something... You'll never forget her Ren

so sorry

It is so sad when one of the ones we love move on. The hurt never goes away but it does get easier with every day, week, and month. I'm glad you have one of her offspring even if he's not similar in personality. My thoughts are with you.
