I am buying a black lab puppy to show and the breeder wants to co-own, I won't have a chance to talk more with him about what this entails for him until the weekend. Anyone have any experience with this? What's typical??

the best thing you can do is to see a copy of the co-ownership agreement..... once you see that it will be able to answer your questions.... some agreements are very easy.... mine is usually so that I have control over the puppy until the puppy achieves a certain level of achievement. Some want to be able to show the puppy in certain classes but there is no requirement on your part other than to just have their name on it. Some co-ownerships require puppies back especially on bitches. Some co-ownerships just want to be able to use the dog at stud or have control over who the dog is bred to.

I do co-own Shalva with a friend of mine and my Meghans breeder (shalvas mother) we did the co-ownership because my friend didn't have a dog to show at that time and we wanted to make sure that she could show the dog in sweepstakes and bred by exhibitor class if she wanted..... that is the only reason she is co-owned....

read the contract then once you have that then it will be better to answer about the pros and cons of the contract.
don't automatically rule it out..... but definitely see the contract and be sure that you and this breeder think alike and have the same values because if you don't it could cause a problem in the long run, if she wants to do something that you don't approve of or vice versa.

I do insist on co-owning intact dogs when the person is a new show person..... it stresses me out to have an intact dog out there with someone brand new so if that person is new I write clearly under what conditions I will sign off on the dog and if it is a male my name goes first, their name goes second.

Female or male? Is this person well known and respected in the breed? What are thier usual terms? Just because someone shows does not mean they have good dogs, have healthy dogs or know what they are doing. Be careful. I know of a couple of people locally that have really bad dogs but they finish them eventually. They think they have wonderful dogs but they look nothing like anyone else's. And they think they know everything also. Everyone else just ignores them. they think it is because we are jealous. NOT. I wouldn't touch thier dogs with a ten foot pole .

Research the breeder very carefully.

Is it a male? who gets stud services? Who decides who the dog is bred to?

is it a female? does the breeder get puppies back? if so, how many? and out of how many litters? Who decides on the stud? Who pays for the breeding? Who pays shipping? Who pays stud fee? Who pays health testing? Who pays for the vet care for the pups? Who pays csection fee? When does the breeder take her puppies? Who decides who gets what puppies.

Lots of things to consider and have it all in writing.

Be careful with the breeding rights, Shalva gave good advice.

I'd be more willing to deal with the local people than the 'big names' in my breed. Many people are known to trap people into less than desirable circumstances. I've seen people trying to get on the up and ups with them and just get screwed over. I wouldn't touch those dogs if my life depended on it.

Just read the contract carefully. Make a copy of it. most people aren't trying to swindle you or anything. Just make sure you're comfortable.

Wow...that's crazy...

Technically, I have full ownership rights to Orchid, but my mentor has known from the get-go that I won't make a move with out her approval, as I was actively seeking a good mentor when I found her.

I know lots of breeders who co-own with first time show people. I guess I just lucked out.

Truthfully, it wouldn't matter if Orchid was co-owned or not. I'd do what my mentor thought best in almost all situations, anyway.
