Is Charlie a plott hound mix?

Here are some pictures of me with Charlie (these are the best I have, sorry):

I was at the dog park the other day and I saw a plott hound from a distance and thought she was Charlie. So I went home and read a bit about the breed and it sounds like it describes him, particularly the part about having virtually unlimited energy. Plus there's a guy here whose sig is "A bored plott hound is a force of nature", and that describes Charlie pretty well.

Anyway, just by looking at him, what do you think? I've been wondering what breed(s) he is since I got him.

If he is mostly plott hound, what do I do with him? Agility training, obviously (I finally found a place!) but can I take him hunting? I haven't gone hunting since I was a kid, I don't even know where to go in Utah. There's a place near where I live that always has deer by it, would it be okay to take him down there and see what he does with them, or would that be potentially disastrous? The deer are pretty tame.

Yeah, the guy with the siggie is Ron. He's got a plott named Esther.

Your dog doesn't look like a plott to me, but I don't know the breed at all.

His face doesn't look like a Plott's to me but that might be because he's lacking those big floppy ears. He's a cutie though and if he's a high energy dog then getting him into agility would be good for him no matter what kind of breed he is.

Re: Is Charlie a plott hound mix?

Charlie doesn't look an awful lot different from Esther except that her second tone is brindle. The shelter and my vet both expressed the opinion that she is all Plott hound, but I am skeptical.

Plotts do have big floppy ears. Their howl is strangely high-pitched. They can be all brindle, all black or nearly any combination.

They are good water dogs, though I can't imagine why.

Esther, at two, has deveoped into a sweet family dog, but she was a holy terror when we got her.

Since most people have never seen a Plott hound, it's hard to get opinions about them.

Until you really get to know one another and have some training, be careful about taking him out in the open. Hounds in general and Plotts in particular will follow their noses and forget about you. They can cover a lot of ground very quickly.

My first thought was lab/dob mix...but who knows LOL I guess plott mix is just as possible. Not sure where you are or how common plotts are in that area.

I'd say he looks like a lab cross too (could be crossed with a plott...), in size and the shape of his head. He's a lovely looking dog whatever. Is he full grown?

His eyebrows and white under-the-tail remind me of Coco. Her markings are similar to a dobie but she's brown and fawn rather than black and tan (the one in my avatar). She is half lab half german shorthaired pointer.

he looks like a plott hound/lab mix and it looks like he is smiling in that pic so I would have to say he has happy mixed in there also.
