Nipples and Pregnancy

I know that pregnancy implies enlarged nipples. But do enlarged nipples imply pregnancy? Are there other causes for large nipples and developed mammary glands? If nipples grow, is there some certainty that the dog is pregnant?

Re: Nipples and Pregnancy

is there reason to believe that she may be pregnant?.....i have seen some females that looked like they had or were going to have pups, but had been spayed as young dogs.....

Re: Nipples and Pregnancy

We adopted one of our dogs at 12 mos old and I noticed right away that her nipples were larger than our other dog, about the same size and breed. The vet said that she probably had one heat cycle before she was spayed (at 12 mos, just before we were allowed to take her home) and the hormone surge would cause enlarged nipples, possibly for several months. Quite frankly, we've had her for 8 months now and they're still a bit larger than I think is normal.

I've never had an intact female so I'm no expert here. But all my other dogs have been spayed around 6 months, before their first cycle, and none of them evver had enlarged nipples.

i don't think that the heat cycle b/4 spay has anything to do w/ it.....i have 3 females and they have all gone thru heat cycles and the teet size varies....and i had one that was spayed b/4 i got her at 6mo and she was bigger than my females now....she looked like she had just nursed a litter of 6 pups......
