Question Group Project on Dog Owners

Hi,

I'm a new member at this forum and I'm wondering if some of the users here can help me.

Me and a couple of my classmates are doing a group presentation for Anthropology class that pertains to learning more about a social group by interviewing people who part of that group.

My group choose to do a presentation about dog owners and our presentation is due next week Thursday. Because we started late we have only managed to interview about 5 dog owners and are looking for more info.

I came up with the the idea of joining a dog owners forum posting some of our questions on there in order to get access to more dog owners.

Together we have compiled a couple of questions to ask each person we interview such as:

1) What is the breed and sex of your dog?
2) How old is your dog?
3) How long have you been a dog owner?
4) About how much money do you spend on your dog?
5) Do you keep your dog outside or allow him/her to be inside?
6) What activities do you do with your dog?
7) How much time do you spend with your dog?
8) Are you married?
9) Do you have children?
10) Do you hang out with other dog owners?
11) As a dog owner did you have to overcome any significant challenges such as getting obedience training for your dog?
12) What is your reason for owning a dog?

If you have the time to spare I kindly ask that you answer the questions above. Any answers you contribute would be of great help to our project.

Thanks

Re: Group Project on Dog Owners

ahhhhhh yes the smell of panic is in the air...... my students turn in their final projects to me tomm. and I am sure that they are madly trying to find their articles....

So to bail you all out.....

1) What is the breed and sex of your dog?

I have five dogs......
3 Flat Coated Retrievers,
2 Golden Retrievers

1 GR M age 6
1 GR F age 4

1 FCR F age 2
1 FCR M age 5
1 FCR F age 6 almost 7

2) How old is your dog?

answered up there

3) How long have you been a dog owner?

more years than I am willing to put on this page.....

4) About how much money do you spend on your dog?

to much..... my dogs are all showdogs....
they also all eat a raw diet....
so If i were to break this down for you I would be an outlier ...... (taken statistics yet??? )

I spend roughly $350 on dog food every six weeks
I recently removed a sock from the intestinal tract of a hungry dog $2500
A recent spay due to infection was $1300

When I am showing, a show weekend, including travel, hotel, handler fees, entry fees, food for all, gas etc. can cost me $500 for the weekend. I show my dogs about twice a month for the weekend sometimes more sometimes less depending on the season..... so summer from april to November lets figure $750 in show fees per month... that will take care of high months and low months.

Routine vet care for five dogs...... a few thousand a year..... figuring for shots, titers, exams.... etc...... oh and one of my dogs has epilepsy so that adds money... but ok a couple thousand a year....

you didn't ask about toys and treats but thats not to expensive.....

ok so you do the math I don't wanna think about it, to expensive......

Health clearances and other routine veterinary care.....

5) Do you keep your dog outside or allow him/her to be inside?

My dogs are all pets.... and in the house .....

6) What activities do you do with your dog?

we walk, and hike, we go to the lake and do regular dog type stuff in addition to competition obedience, hunt work, and show stuff...... and the training for those things.

7) How much time do you spend with your dog?

not enough.... lately...... several hours per day.... they are always with me when I am home.....

8) Are you married?

Yep

9) Do you have children?

No Way......

10) Do you hang out with other dog owners?

Yes most of my friends are other dog people...... I actually have fewer dogs than most of my friends

11) As a dog owner did you have to overcome any significant challenges such as getting obedience training for your dog?

ok define significant???? because training your dog and making your dog a good citizen is not a significant challenge... it is a part of responsible dog ownership.....

a significant challenge would be getting my epilepsy dog to stop seizing.....

12) What is your reason for owning a dog?

they are kind, and gentle, and loyal, fun to be around, and overall nicer than most people.

Re: Group Project on Dog Owners

1) What is the breed and sex of your dog?
Nikki- Shetland Sheepdog, female
Trey- Shetland Sheepdog, male
Beau- Papillon, Male
Rose- Papillon, female

2) How old is your dog?
Nikki- 11 years
Trey- 10 nearly 11 years
Beau- two nearly three years
Rose- one nearly two years

3) How long have you been a dog owner?
20 years

4) About how much money do you spend on your dog?
A lot. Money for showing, food (all are on high qualty kibble now, might switch to raw), handling fees, entry fees, grooming, toys, treats, vet care for four dogs, etc etc... way too much money.

Showing for two months with all fees included was about $3000. Food is $37 per bag on Canidae, and about $50 (?) per bag of California Natural. Plus vet checks, recent dental cleanings, medicine for the old two, tumor removal from Trey... they're expensive.

5) Do you keep your dog outside or allow him/her to be inside?

All are inside

6) What activities do you do with your dog?

Conformation, Rally- O training for now along with walking, regular stuff, krazy kid's dog show.

7) How much time do you spend with your dog?

All day at home. As much time as I can.

8) Are you married?

Nope

9) Do you have children?

Nope

10) Do you hang out with other dog owners?

All the time. Show people, other papillon people. Know way too many dogs lol.

11) As a dog owner did you have to overcome any significant challenges such as getting obedience training for your dog?

Well obedience is not a significant challenge to me. Just a basic thing the dogs do.

12) What is your reason for owning a dog?

Because I love dogs?

Re: Group Project on Dog Owners

1) What is the breed and sex of your dog?
Pekingese, neutered male

2) How old is your dog?
Approximately three years

3) How long have you been a dog owner?
I've had family dogs as far back as I can remember, but have owned my own dog for 11 months.

4) About how much money do you spend on your dog?
Honestly, not very much. His food is under $15 a month, I get flea & heartworm protection at wholesale because I work for a vet, and I groom him myself. He doesn't destroy toys, so they last him a long time.

5) Do you keep your dog outside or allow him/her to be inside?
He's inside. Any time he's outside he's supervised in a fenced in yard or on a leash.

6) What activities do you do with your dog?
Training, walks, playtime, hiking, watching tv (he likes any show were there's barking).

7) How much time do you spend with your dog?
Since he's inside, we're together anytime I'm home.

8) Are you married?
Yes.

9) Do you have children?
No "human" children, just pets.

10) Do you hang out with other dog owners?
Most of my friends and all of my coworkers are dog owners.

11) As a dog owner did you have to overcome any significant challenges such as getting obedience training for your dog?
I wouldn't consider obedience training a significant challenge. I think it's a part of any owner's responsibility, and as important as getting vet care. I did overcome resource guarding with my little guy. He was pretty possessive when we first got him.

12) What is your reason for owning a dog?
I love all pets, wanted the companionship of a dog, and knew I had the time and resources to give a rescue dog a great 2nd chance.

I don't keep track. Vet visits, food, toys, grooming and other supplies....

5) Do you keep your dog outside or allow him/her to be inside?
inside, leashed outside

6) What activities do you do with your dog?
walking, hiking, tug-of-war, other games, training

after work and weekends

8) Are you married?

no

10) Do you hang out with other dog owners?

We are currently training our dog ourselves.

Re: Group Project on Dog Owners

1) What is the breed and sex of your dog? We have one female beagle, two male beagles and a female american foxhound.

2) How old is your dog? 6,5,3 & 2

3) How long have you been a dog owner? Six years

4) About how much money do you spend on your dog? More than I ever dreamed. Probably $200-300 dollars a month on food and then the vet. Other than annual visits we had a $5000 ACL surgery and a $1000 root canal and the ear infection from hell.

5) Do you keep your dog outside or allow him/her to be inside? Inside

6) What activities do you do with your dog? We go for walks and go to the dog park on the weekends. We also play ball in the backyard.

7) How much time do you spend with your dog? If I am home I am with them, so several hours a day, but there is usually someone home with them all day.

8) Are you married? Yes. He has had dogs his whole life.

9) Do you have children? Yes - 2

10) Do you hang out with other dog owners? Yes, at the park. I meet up there with a girl I went to high school with who has three basset hounds.

11) As a dog owner did you have to overcome any significant challenges such as getting obedience training for your dog? We are still working on issues with the foxhound. She apparently had a pretty rough start. But training is helping a lot.

12) What is your reason for owning a dog? I always wanted a dog, but my parents said no. When we finally got a house we decided it was time for a dog. Then we just had to agree on a breed. I love the companionship. They are always happy to see me, they eat what you put in front of them and no body complains.

Wink Re: Group Project on Dog Owners

Boy! What a good idea. And how difficult it is to come up with actual figures...but here goes~

1. English Pointer, male
2. 1 year
3. most of my life...first dog in high school, long, long ago
4. Okay, here's where it gets tough...insurance per month, $28.00, food is at least $250.00 (only the best for my boy), equipment (he is he** on harnesses...has eaten 4 so far) $50.00 this includes toys, which he also eats regularly, bedding, $50.00, for the same reason. Vet visits average $40.00 per month for a year.
5. He lives indoors with us. He visits outside alot, but never to stay.
6. We walk the hike and bike trail with other dog friends. We also walk around the neighborhood. We have play dates with other dog buddies. We are preparing to go back to obedience classes, to prepare for good citizen training. We travel to see mom and siblings at the breeder's home. We hang out w/family playing with toys.
7. Virtually all day every day. I'm at home now, so he has my attention all the time, except when I have to run errands, etc. He is rarely left alone (to his own devices...)
8.yes, for 35 years (I was a child bride);~)
9. yes, two grown children, two grandchildren, not grown
10.Sure...who else would put up with us????
11. The only significant obstacle we overcame was getting through the interview process at the breeder. She was very selective, thank goodness. Since Oliver will become a therapy dog one day soon, all training is significant. So is learning to adjust to the traits of a sporting breed, which is something new for us.
12. I heard a quote from one of the announcers of the Westminster Kennel Club dog show, who died several years ago. He said: "Dogs are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole." that pretty much sums it up.

Re: Group Project on Dog Owners

1) What is the breed and sex of your dog? Maltese toy poodle and a cocker spaniel cross both female
2) How old is your dog? Malti-poo is 4.5 and cocker is 5 months
3) How long have you been a dog owner? Since I was born I have had dogs in my life
4) About how much money do you spend on your dog? Anywhere from $20.00 to $200.00 depending on hat they need that month (food, vet bills, toys, treats, etc)
5) Do you keep your dog outside or allow him/her to be inside? My dogs live inside, I am of the opinion that if you have dogs they should be in your house because what is the point of having a dog if he/she can't be with you?
6) What activities do you do with your dog? Aside from the usual walks and play time everyday they do agility and will be starting obedience classes and Sadie does a puppy class also
7) How much time do you spend with your dog? When I am not at work I am with my dogs, they go everywhere with me except grocery shopping.
8) Are you married? Not yet
9) Do you have children? No
10) Do you hang out with other dog owners? Pretty much all of my friends have dogs except maybe three who are allergic or have to many cats
11) As a dog owner did you have to overcome any significant challenges such as getting obedience training for your dog? The only significant challenge I have had to overcome with Chloe is the fact that she is not well socialized so she would rather attack first and ask questions later which makes alot of people think she will bite people but she wouldn't. She is only nervous of other dogs. I had problems finding a class that would allow her to do agility and obedience because of these problems but I was looking in the wrong places, I had to find a trainer who had dealt with her issues before.
12) What is your reason for owning a dog?DOGZ RULE MAN!!!! I have always loved dogs and I don't think I will ever be without one now. The longest period of dog free life I had was from 12 to 16.....never again.

Re: Group Project on Dog Owners

1) What is the breed and sex of your dog?
Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) – Male
Shetland Sheepdog/Papillon mix (mutt) - Male

2) How old is your dog?
Both are right around 1 year old
3) How long have you been a dog owner?
My family has always owned a dog. I have only owned mine for 8 months for the sheltie, and 10 months for the cute little mutt.
4) About how much money do you spend on your dog?
$30 a month not including vet bills.
5) Do you keep your dog outside or allow him/her to be inside?
Indoors – All dogs belong indoors
6) What activities do you do with your dog?
Walks, play fetch, and groom them. At the end of the day, they use me as a pillow while watching TV.
7) How much time do you spend with your dog?
14-15 hours a day during the week. Weekend time varies, usually a few hours more, but less occasionally. I do have a social life after all.
8) Are you married?
No
9) Do you have children?
No
10) Do you hang out with other dog owners?
Once in a while.
11) As a dog owner did you have to overcome any significant challenges such as getting obedience training for your dog?
I dealt with a fear of fences with the mutt, and getting the other dog used to walking on a leash. He had never been on a leash before I got him. I do my own training.
12) What is your reason for owning a dog?
Companion – Dogs are great companion pets.
