Japanese fooled in poodle scam

Click here to find out more!
Thousands of Japanese have been swindled in a scam in which they were sold Australian and British sheep and told they were poodles.

Flocks of sheep were imported to Japan and then sold by a company called Poodles as Pets, marketed as fashionable accessories, available at $1,600 each.

That is a snip compared to a real poodle which retails for twice that much in Japan.

The scam was uncovered when Japanese moviestar Maiko Kawamaki went on a talk-show and wondered why her new pet would not bark or eat dog food.

She was crestfallen when told it was a sheep.

Then hundreds of other women got in touch with police to say they feared their new "poodle" was also a sheep.

One couple said they became suspicious when they took their "dog" to have its claws trimmed and were told it had hooves.

Japanese police believe there could be 2,000 people affected by the scam, which operated in Sapporo and capitalised on the fact that sheep are rare in Japan, so many do not know what they look like.

"We launched an investigation after we were made aware that a company were selling sheep as poodles," Japanese police said, the The Sun reported.

"Sadly we think there is more than one company operating in this way.

"The sheep are believed to have been imported from overseas - Britain, Australia."

Many of the sheep have now been donated to zoos and farms.

Isnt that just horrible? Ugh..that makes me really mad!

LOL!!!!

No offense, but if people can't tell the difference between a dog and a sheep, then I think they pretty much deserved it. LOL!!!!!!

WHOA! How stupid are they? "One couple said they became suspicious when they took their 'dog' to the groomer and was told it had hooves." I'm GLAD they're not getting dogs! They'd probably be dead by now!

Re: Japanese fooled in poodle scam

Gosh, at first I thought this article came from The Onion.

What's really sad is you end up realizing how many people are so uneducated about dogs in general but just want that "fashion accessory." Not the people you want to be dog owners.

Re: Japanese fooled in poodle scam

Well my question is how can you mistake a dog for a sheep? I mean it is a basic thing....dogs have paws, sheep have cloven hooves. Dogs bark and whine, sheep baaa and bleet. How can that not give it away? I mean seriously even if you have never seen a sheep in your life, how can you not know what they look like? In school I saw a billion pictures of a sheep before I ever saw a live one....that just baffles me, LOL!!!

Re: Japanese fooled in poodle scam

Oh I know! ..Even if they didn't know about sheep...If they really want a dog..and they are going to care for him/her they should at least know what theylook like!

Exactly!

Wow...So sad...

Well, I just found out that Snopes has debunked this whole story.

Thank goodness. I'd hate to think this story was true.

Re: Japanese fooled in poodle scam

hhmmnnn.. this is weird.im living in Japan but i havent heard of this news. I have to agree with the posters here, that is soo stupid to not know the difference between a poodle and a sheep.
They said on the news that sheeps are hard to find here. But the first time i saw a sheep was here in Japan.
This news is soo embarrasing for the ignorance of some Japanese people.
