Which Way Is His Tail Waggin' Today?

Here's an interesting NY Times articles about possible meaning behind tail wagging biased to the dog's left or right side:

That's really interesting - I'll have a closer look at mine wagging. Isabel, when she's feeling a bit uncertain, will sit on her left side and wag the tip of her tail. I wonder if this is a right side of the brain behaviour.

Re: Which Way Is His Tail Waggin' Today?

Interesting article! I haven't noticed a bias in our dogs' tail-wagging - I know that Coco's is so long that when she's got a good wag going it nearly touches her body on both sides at the extremity of the wag.

Tess also has this thing of "helicoptering" with her tail (it moves in a circle) when she's looking for something like her ball when she can't immediately see it. Is this a known retriever trait? I haven't noticed if the circle always goes the same way, but I expect it would. She always turns to the left when she comes back to us (another thread was posted a while ago asking if our dogs were "left-handed" or right).

Re: Which Way Is His Tail Waggin' Today?

Very interesting article. Thank you for posting it. I've watched my dogs since reading it and noticed that not only does my lab's tail wag right, but he actually points his entire behind to the right when he's running up to greet me. My hound, however, kind of keeps her tail in the middle and shakes it, lol, wonder what that means, although she does tilt her head to the right. Wonder if that counts.

We have said that our dog would be left handed if he was a human. He likes the driver side of the car better, shakes with his left paw first, just seems to be left handed. Wonder what that says about him! I will be watching his tail wagging also.

Re: Which Way Is His Tail Waggin' Today?

Incident last night further confirmed the info in this article. My saint was laying down in kitchen and thought he heard a strange sound from outside the door. He jumped up and ran to the door and just started barking like crazy, and boy, was his tail just whipping away to the left. Then we called him over to us and were calling him good boy for protecting us and his tail did a complete 180 and was just flapping way to the right, lol. Exactly like the article said. Very interesting.

Re: Which Way Is His Tail Waggin' Today?

When Chloe is barking at another dog her tail swings very slowly from side to side and is very stiff. When she is greeting me when I come home I can't tell which way it swings because it moves way to fast! Same with Sadie's.
