Rawhide Chews

Is It Ok To Give A Dog Rawhide Chews? My 4 Month Old Puppy Loves Them (a Rolled Up Type) But I've Heard They Can Actually Hurt Him. I Took It Away Till I Hear They're Ok.

My dogs don't have any problems with them. I do keep an eye on them while they eat them. I have heard 'greenes' can be bad for them though. Some dogs swallow pieces that are large and they won't break down in their stomachs. I hear it's extreemly rare, but I don't take the chance.

Any chew poses a potential risk and should be supervised.

Some people say that eating raw hide and then drinking water could cause the raw hide to expand too much making it unable to pass through their system.

It really depends on the dog. If the dog can bite off big pieces, those pieces will swell in the stomach. Rawhide doesn't digest, so if the piece is too big to pass through the stomach into the intestines, it stays there. Greenies have plastic in them, and again are not digestible, but if the dog only chews off little tiny pieces, then they will pass through.

Rawhides are meant as a chew toy, not an edible treat.
