Bad Night

Ok so I have a vizsla, obviously. He is 6 months old. He has never pooped in the house and the last time he peed in the house was 2.5 months ago. He sleeps in my bed. Last night there was a storm and I woke up in the middle of the night and he had jumped down off the bed, pooped 2 times, and peed just a little bit, then jumped back on the bed (we were asleep). First of all, our bed is really high, I didnt even know he could jump on and off the bed. Second, there have been plenty of storms before and he didnt do this, actually one 2 nights ago that was even louder. Our door was closed and my wife and I can be heavy sleepers. Is it possible that knowing he jumped off the bed and couldnt get out of the room and pooped on the floor a sign that he knows not to use the bathroom inside, he just couldnt help it? Or is this a sign that he isnt actually potty trained. My question is, is he trained, or am I just trained to take him out so much he doenst have chance to pee inside (until last night).

Re: Bad Night

Well, what some experts that I have read say, is that you can't REALLY trust a dog to be FULLY potty-trained until they are around a year old. Yes, they can go for months without going, but you can't completely trust them. Is it possible that he had any problems with his bladder that night? I puppy-sat one of Jaylie's brother's, and he was having a problem...He pooped about three times in a row, (Two outside, one inside by the door) but I could tell he had been TRYING to get out, he just couldn't hold it. Sometimes this is just a one day (Or one night) thing...So, basically, I wouldn't worry about it. Still, you have to keep a close eye on him, but I think that that's a normal thing for him to do.

Re: Bad Night

I think you should just put him in a kennel. It'll keep him from going to the bathroom during the night because dogs don't pee or poo were they sleep and also because if he does jump of your bed and it's so high he can end up hurting himself.
It could just have been that he didn't go out before you guys went to bed and ended up having to go to the bathroom during the middle of the night. If he didn't have any accidents for over 2 months I doubt that he's not trained.

Yeah he has a kennel that he sleeps in unless he sleeps with us. I have heard that too about the 1 year thing, I think I just jumped into letting him sleep with us too fast, although he has been for the last month with no problems. I really think it was just one of those days he couldnt hold it, because like I said he has never pooped in the house.

Re: Bad Night

Perhaps he had something different to eat that day? Or maybe he ate soemthing bad in his travels outdoors. Or perhaps he is just afraid of storms. Or like others have said, he didn't do his business when you let him out for the last time before bed...was it raining then?

My dogs are crated every night, no matter how old they are because every dog is going to get sick now and again. I just hate cleaning up the mess
from the floors.
