Re: What if?

If I was allergic to dogs I don't think I would have one, if I was allergic enough that I would have to take meds every day that is. When I was growing up we always had dogs, then for years after I moved out on my own I didn't have a dog. We recently bought and house and now have a dog. When you don't have a dog you get used to it, which doesn't mean you don't miss having a dog, you just realize that for whatever reason you can't have one at the time.

I'm glad I'm not allergic to dogs and very glad that we have a great dog now, but I wouldn't have one if the timing and situation wasn't right.

Re: What if?

Thats funny you post that today. I just went in for allergy testing. Doctor said dogs are causing asthma or something like that. He said "what do you want to do about the dogs?"

I said there is no way in the world I would give them up. I think the asthma was triggered because I recently began grooming alot of neighborhood dogs. I am not a pro but do a really nice job. Anyway I will stop that and just take meds untill this is cleared and then hope it does not return.

If it does I will still keep them and just take the meds. They are here now and will stay here forever

There are many dog breeds out there that are hyopalergenic, poodles & havnese for example. There's also quite a few breeds that have a minimal amount of pet dander and are suitable for some with mild allergies. And of course there's allways allergy meds.

For the people who don't have time for a dog they shouldn't own a dog. If they truely love dogs they would reaslize that it's in the dogs best intrest to not own a dog that's going to end up neglegted. Pet ownership is a privledge not a right, if you don't have the means to take care of a pet properly then you shouldn't have a pet.

I have had to live 2 years without my dogs and cat because I was living in college dorms. At first it wasn't that bad, but after awhile I started to really miss them. My soultion to the situation was to get a pet fish. Fish are great because require a minimal amount of time and care, they don't run off, or keep your roomate up all night, and best of all they were allowed in the dorms.

Re: What if?

My family was dogless for 17 years after I married a woman who was violently allergic to dogs. We're not talking sniffles and itchy eyes. We're talking asthma attacks and trips to the ER. They were not easy years. You may wonder how a guy who likes dogs better than he likes most people could do that. I was smitten. Still am, in fact.

She likes dogs, had the shots and maybe outgrew the allergies to some extent, so we made up for lost time by adopting first a 115 pound lab and, more recently, a Plott hound named Hurricane Esther.

Re: What if?

A year without dogs? Nope, sorry. Especially if I can't have my dog!

I was allergic to dogs....very mildly- just a runny nose and itching. I volunteer at a golden rescue, and I still get sneezy there, but I'm okay around a few dogs at a time now. And...I still go to rescue, lol!

Re: What if?

Im allergic but there is no way in freaking hell im getting rid of the dog. It was really bad when he was sleeping with me in the same bed because I couldnt breath at night (because my nose would get clogged) and I ended up with sore throat for days.

Now the dog sleeps down stairs and Im much better.

Re: What if?

I'm allergic to some dogs. I had a pretty violent hacking, snorting, sneezing, coughing fit after being around an English Bulldog a few weeks ago. Broke out in hives after holding a Dalmation. And always seem to sneeze around Pomeranians, which I find very strange because their fur is very similar in texture to my dog's.

My husband is asthmatic, and allergic to everyone's pets but ours. He's used to our gang, but needs to take allergy pills if he's around other people's pets.
