| What should i do ? Advise on my puppy selection Hello all,
I have a two year old female siberian husky who had her first litter just 10 days ago with 5 gorgeous babies. I would love to keep one of them but i can not make a decision as i have not gone thru this before.
If i keep one of the males, i will need to get my female fixed ( i do not want another litter anyways) just because it sounds gross to see mother and son...
If i keep one of the females (i have two solid whites i adore) i am afraid that they will get into fight in the future? Thats what couple people said.
What should i do? Which of should i keep ?
Please help me if you have any suggestions or any experience.
Thank you |

wait a bit longer, the one you want or rather that wants you will let you know
as to the fighting thing, not always true - the adults will trach the puppy and thereby be the dominate over her, it can work out - are they obediance (sp) trained? will help if they are - still I would suggest spaying all the females regardless - mostly for health reasons |

| Re: What should i do ? Advise on my puppy selection so the most important thing is for what reason did you breed the litter as that will give you direction as to choosing the puppy that is the one to keep.... if you bred to improve heads then you want to look at that.... or if you bred to improve movement or tail set ..... or perhaps you bred to improve health and longevity.... I am assuming you have had your dog evaluated by a third party in the show ring or in the working arenas to make your dog prove that she was worth breeding to begin with.....
I am also not sure why you are looking to decide what puppy you want to keep when there is no way to do structural analysis or temperment testing on a ten day old puppy..... and I would assume that you would want to do that so you could determine which is the most structurally sound puppy in the litter and which one best fits the husky breed standard......
I also assume you have done all of your health clearances as huskies are prone to eye problems and glaucoma as well as other medical issues so considering the bitch is just two I am sure you are aware of her pedigree and what exists in her pedigree and that should also help you make a decision as well.....
The fact is regardless of how gross it sounds you would never breed a mother and a son whether YOU wanted another litter or not.... that is way to close a linebreeding and while it would improve type it also increases other problems.....
If you want my honest opinion.... it really doesn't sound like you have done your homework and I am not sure that you could really tell me why you bred this litter.....
I think all of the dogs should be spayed and neutered and then you just pick the one you like.... and don't breed another litter.

| Re: What should i do ? Advise on my puppy selection Well, I got all health exams done for my dog and have her bred. Her hips and eyes were checked and also her blood. She was seen by the vet once a week during her pregnancy as she is a part of my family.
I came here to ask an opinion and with a hope to find an answer to my questions. I just do not need anybody to try to look down on me with so much knowledge. I do not believe i have as much knowledge as you do but i just know that i love my dog and i am not a dog owner with no knowledge.
I do not agree with linebreeding as i have seen weird looking puppies in the past and it does not look nice either. I wanted to bred her just because she is the most beautiful husky most people have ever seen and we decided to keep the bloodline and give pups to loved ones.
I just could not decide on what gender i should have kept for her sake and for the pups sake in the future. That was all my concern.
If you are stressed and trying to insult people, i will suggest you to go outside and get some fresh air. That may help.
Have a nice day |

| Re: What should i do ? Advise on my puppy selection mielcre, Hi Congrats on your puppies. Maybe you can posts some picture. I would love to see them and I am sure alot of other forum members would as well. Huskies are beautiful dogs. They do not suit our life style well but we just love how they look.
I have always heard that 1 boy and 1 girl will get along best. In my personal experience as a pet owner I have alway found it to be true with my guine pigs, birds and my 2 dogs are male and female. I think maybe 2 females could get along too but just better buddies or companions to each other being 1 male and 1 female. I am not any kind of expert though that is just what I have seen and heard. |

| Re: What should i do ? Advise on my puppy selection mielcre - have you decided who is getting what dog or are they all to wait till you make your decision? I still think it is best till they open their eyes, and walk around with a "purpose". Then let each of them investigate you, there will be 1 that will, in one way or another, let you know they are claiming you. As to the female/female thing, I am assuming that 1 of the females is the mother? If never seperated from her young, then the only fights will be her teaching her pup & when her pup decides she knows best (this happens in all species, humans too). Allow this to happen, usually short lived and adds to the harmony in the long run. I have 4 dogs, 2 males & 2 females, all different breeds and ages. The smallest (a female) rules, the others accept this with little challange. (See my siggy to access my blog to see the differences.) They are my loves and my life. |

| Re: What should i do ? Advise on my puppy selection Wait longer till the pups are older and you'll fall in love with one. Usually the dog chooses you, not the other way around. It won't be as hard of a desision then. You should get your female fixed as soon as you can as to avoid any health problems in the future. Wether you chose a male or female puppy it should be fixed as soon as it's possible.
As for mom and daughter staying together in your home, it should work out fine. My sister's family had a labridor retriever(sp?) and they kept a daughter from her litter. They were very close. |

Have a nice day | With all do respect, I have to agree with Shalva on this one. Her post was not insulting, quite the contrary, she's educating you - the only reason to breed is to better it. If you had a breeding program with this in mind, you wouldn't be asking this question. Plain and simple. I commend you on getting the appropriate health testing done, but just because "she is the most beautiful husky most people have ever seen" was no reason to breed her. The fact of the matter is, AT BEST you will only get 1/2 the dog you have now. The only way to re-produce your dog to a tee is to clone it. But, what's done is done and you now have cute little puppies . I am sure the pup you keep will make that decision for you.
But please take Shalva's advice, make sure the pups get spayed/neutered - including your bitch - and leave the breeding to the pro's. |

| Re: What should i do ? Advise on my puppy selection Because she is not sure which sex to pick says nothing about the "homework" she has done. She did all the necessary tests, it was assumed that she hadnt because she was making this post. While it appears that he was trying to educate, it also appears he made some inferences out of nothing. Im not saying either one of you is wrong or right, just letting both of you know that:
1: I dont think Shalva was trying to insult
and
2: You can not make a guess about the homework she has done by using only this question as your basis. |

| Re: What should i do ? Advise on my puppy selection just because someone takes their dog to the vet does not mean they have done the "proper testing."
I would ask if the OP knows what OFA is, or what CERF means, and then I would make a judgment.
I bet that he/she doesn't know, because no good breeder would breed a dog "because they are pretty."
That in and of itself tells me this person has a very limited knowledge of breeding, and should not produce a future litter.
And, to the OP- if you can't handle a little criticism about your breeding practices, then you definitely shouldn't be doing it. That's called "kennel blindness" and its easy to get. |

| Re: What should i do ? Advise on my puppy selection I have to agree with Snowshoe and Shalva. Obviously this person isn't qualified to have bred a litter, otherwise they wouldn't be asking a public forum on which puppy to keep. |
