What's with the humping?

My 7 year old female toy poodle has started humping my leg. she's not spayed and I don't know if she's in heat or not. this started about 4 days ago and only happens at night when we sit down to watch TV. she'll go at it for a good couple of hours or until I pick her up. She also has started to chew on my pant leg. She doesn't do any of this during the day. And let me tell you...she's very serious about it!

It is a display of dominance and the fact that you say that she does it for hours has set a precedent for her. I would not let her do it, it is not appropriate behavior.

Well, I am trying to stop her from doing it, trust me! But you know poodles...they are very determined!

That is one thing about dog training you have to do. Be persistant! Thats right just keep doing it over and over and over, until the dog stops whatever its doing.

Re: What's with the humping?

My husband says it is scary that our dog (a poodle) is smarter than us. I am sure a firm "Off" followed by a "Sit/Stay" over and over and over again will work.

Re: What's with the humping?

My poodle did that for a while before I got him fixed but it deff is a dominance thing. He only did it to people that were visiting and stuff. He would never try doing it to my parents and when he did it to me I told him NO and made it very clear he wasn't allowed to do that. Just be very consistent with stopping her from doing it.

Re: What's with the humping?

This is a common behavior with females and sort of goes with if it feels good.... it can also be a dominance behavior
