| must read book for dog people I just finished reading Marley and Me by John Grogan. It's on the New York Times bestseller list about "life and love with the world's worst dog".
Go get it....you'll love it! |

| Re: must read book for dog people I agree, great book. But I still haven't been able to finish it. I always start crying.
Peace - for the most part it would be appropriate for your kids, but there are a few sections you may have to cut out (he goes into some detail when they are trying to have kids). Mostly though it's about family's bond with Marley, so they may enjoy it.
One more thing - Carla: what's the Dennisson book about? |

Originally Posted by peace36 I have seen that book on the store shelves before. Never picked it up. Thanks I think now I will Is it a book that would be appropriate to read with my 9 and 10 yr old daughters? | Dear Reader,
When I wrote Marley & Me I had a clear audience in mind. And it did not include children. I wrote my book for adults and assumed only adults, and possibly teenagers, would be drawn to it.
But I was wrong. Very early on, I began to see a trend at my book readings around the country: Couples were coming and bringing their children. Children of all ages. The little ones sat around my feet and the older ones asked for my autograph and told me how much they enjoyed the book, even if it was not quite age appropriate for them. They giggled and laughed at my stories of Marley’s antics, and regaled me with tales of their own mischievous dogs. All of them had been touched by my story of the irrepressibly naughty Marley.
Many parents have told me they read Marley & Me aloud to their children, editing out the more adult content and mature themes as they go. Others said they struggled with whether to allow their grade-school-age children to read the book. So much of it was perfect for them, they said, but then there were those scenes dealing with marriage and miscarriage and procreation and violent crime.
And so the decision to target Marley’s story to young readers was an obvious one. For the little ones, ages 3-7, there is the picture book Bad Dog, Marley! It is the fictional tale of a typical family with a lovable but very naughty Labrador retriever, who in the end proves his worth and teaches the family what really matters. I had a lot of fun writing for this age group, and Richard Cowdrey’s playful illustrations brought my vision to life. For older children, ages 8-12, there is a young-reader edition of the adult book. I named it Marley: A Dog Like No Other, and I removed all the adult-themed content and rewrote and reshaped passages throughout the book to make them more kid-friendly.
I am very proud and excited to be able to bring Marley’s universal story to readers of all ages. I would love to hear your feedback.
With warm regards,
John Grogan |

| Re: must read book for dog people BRINGING LIGHT TO SHADOW - A DOG TRAINER'S DIARY
by Pamela Dennison
Every trainer, everyone who has ever owned or worked with an aggressive dog needs this book! The gods that protect fools, optimists, and little children must have known what they were doing when they brought together this dog and this owner. Shadow was a handsome, fearful, aggressive, secondhand Border Collie. He lashed out at people without warning and avoided human touch. Pam Dennison was a professional dog trainer with 12 years experience and a half dozen successful dog adoptions behind her when she met Shadow. When she found him at a Border Collie rescue site on the Internet she was just looking to round out her canine family. Like a match.com date she decided to meet Shadow "just to see" and, because she couldn't think of any reason not to take him home, he became hers. He also became her problem! Follow their 18-month journey, in diary form, from the early, dark days of fear and furstration to the daylight of confidence and trust. Learn how difficult it is, even for a professional dog trainer, to handle a dog with a past - and a temper too. A trainer who refused to give up while using positive, no-force training methods!

Please, for the slow-witted among us, be very clear when you're quoting another source.
I got very excited thinking John Grogan was a registered member here.
Great book. I read it in nearly one sitting. |

| Re: must read book for dog people I think I will have to read Marley and Me soon. I made a thread for a book list so we can have a resource on some great dog related books. I just got 3 from the library, they are... The Dog Who Spoke With Gods by Diane Jessup
(Its about a med. student who falls for a labratory dog, a pit bull. She makes it her mission to learn about studies done on dogs, the pit bull breed - and she has heavy decisions to make in regards to her beliefs, wants in life and the views general public has towards the dogs' breed.---Taken from a post by Jessica&Crew) Bones Would Rain From the Sky: Deepening Our Relationships with Dogs by Suzanne Clothier (Suggested by lovemygreys) The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell (highly recommended by opokki)
And I am also reading The Dog Listener by Jan Fennell
Here's a link to the book list! http://www.dogforums.com/7-off-topic...book-list.html (Book List) |

| Re: must read book for dog people I really liked The Other End of the Leash. I'm reading another book by Patricia McConnell (For the Love of a Dog: Understanding Emotions in You and Your Best Friend) and it's pretty good, but not as good as her other one. |

I am going to borrow it when it's back in, along with Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor, The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson and How to Teach a New Dog Old Tricks by Ian Dunbar. |

| Re: must read book for dog people I read Marley & Me while sitting with family while my FIL was having 5-way heart by-pass surgery - everyone in the waiting room started asking if I was ok, I had started the day laughing and had moved to crying - even my husband was worried Quote:
