| cat killer I have a two year old doxie, who has always chased cats, but less then 2 weeks ago my husband brought home a kitten. Of course my doxie was very interested, we thought she was getting used to the kitten, but we still kept the kitten in a separate room when we left. Yesterday we left and thought we shut the door to the room he was in, but when we came home the kitten was dead and we are pretty sure it was our doxie. Our kids were very upset. We are thinking about getting and older cat. But I was wandering if this is typical of doxies. Does anyone have doxies and cats living together in harmony? |

| Re: cat killer Your Doxie has a very high Prey Drive which is a part of the breed. I honestly don't think I'd bring another cat in the house at all. |

| Re: cat killer I think if your kitten had been an adult cat it would have been fine and could fight the dog off. But because it was a kitten it didnt have the strength or the size to win a fight. I would suggest getting and adult male cat. Males are normally stronger than the females, IMO. |

| Re: cat killer So, if she's gets a more formidable cat, one that can beat the hell out of the dog and maybe do some serious damage, would that be a solution?
How important is it for you to have a cat? Are you willing to put either the cat or the dog at risk? |

If you had a puppy, and you could socialize it and get it used to cats, that's one thing.
However, your dog is set in his or her ways, and will likely try to kill the cat as they see it as prey.
If you got a large, male cat and your dog attacked it, the cat could easily blind your dog with its claws. The cat would only be defending itself, after all.
If you got a declawed cat that had no means of defending itself, your dog would likely kill it.
Catch 22. Don't get a cat. |

| Re: cat killer Why do you think the dog killed the cat? Was there any marks on the cat? Was there any saliva on the cat? You are just guessing that your dog killed the cat so there is a chance it wasnt the dog that killed it. My cat chases dogs, seriously she does if they dont get what her hissing/growling means, but she would never kill one. |

| Re: cat killer Ron is right. you shouldnt bring another animal into your home until you trainthe doxie not to obivously kill but also not to hunt. This type of behavior can be stoped. The dog is obviously of the impression that it will be alpha no matter what. I wouldnt even trust a baby around it now. If you have a small baby come to visit, muzzle the dog. I would also be taking the doxie to the vet to ensure that it is not sick. Some dogs will attack when they are ill. Are you sure that it was the Doxie? Was there anyone else there or are there any other animals? Did the kitten show signs of trama (attack) or could it have gotten into something and died as a result.
when a animal dies suddenly like that, you should always look at all the angles. |

| Re: cat killer I agree with Carla and RonE too. I would not get another kitten.
That was not a bad idea about getting an older cat though. I do not think they would just beat the hell out of eachother. I would think the doxie would just learn once real quick not to mess with the cat and that would be the end of it.
Sorry for your lost you must have felt just sick over it. Really very sad |

| Re: cat killer I own two Dachshunds and they do fine with cats BUT they were raised around cats. If Dachshunds are raised up with kitten/cats in a stable environment they will be fine. I would not take the chance on bringing another kitten/cat into the home. |

| Re: cat killer That's so sad. I really don't think you should get another cat. Atleast not for a while. I would like to know though, how do you know it was the Doxie that killed it? They are a hunting dog so I could easily see why it would have killed a small kitten, but just incase. |

| Re: cat killer I don't think you should get another cat. A dog that won't leave a cat alone, plus a cat that's big enough and strong enough to take care of itself, could very well mean a dog with it's eyes scratched out.
I've had my dog 10 months, and I still wont' let him around my cats unsupervised. I don't think he could hurt them, but I'm not confident that he'd back off before he got his only eye damaged. It's not a risk I'm willing to take until I'm 110% sure they all get along. And that day may never come. |
