Re: Puppies and Excercise!!!

Well my 2 pups one is a Golden and the other is a Corgi and they both have been out with me doing ranch work and running most if not all day from the time they where 7-9 months old. Now at the beginning they did come in through out the day and take naps but now they are out side with me most of the day. They run and play and are helping with the horses and all. I can not say how many miles this would add up too but it would be several I would think. However they did work up to this from a young age.

I would go out on a run with the idea that you are watching for fatigue in the dog, and drop down to a slower pace and then walk back home. Obviously she will increase in endurance with age. But 2 miles might be a bit too much, depending on how active your dog has been to this point.

Re: Puppies and Excercise!!!

no no no no no......
2 miles is way to far and any organized running is not a good idea for a retriever puppy. that would totally void my health guarantee if I found out that someone took their puppy out for even a half mile run...... you have to be careful with those hips and joints..... so the rule of thumb for a run is 18 mos.

chasing balls and bumpers is enough excercise for a young pup...... going and playing with other dogs is enough.... a puppy especially a retriever which is bred to be a companion will go and go even if they are tired if they think it pleases you..... that is why as a rule of thumb we tell puppy people no organized running or jumping until 18 mos. at a minimum 2 is better.....
